Men's Basketball Defeats Medgar Evers, Off to Best Conference Start Since '19-'20

New York, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team continued into the back half of its four-game homestand Friday night, as the Bloodhounds (13-5, 6-1 CUNYAC) hosted Medgar Evers (3-15, 1-6 CUNYAC) for its seventh CUNY Athletic Conference match-up of the season.

Just days after dispatching two of the top four teams in the conference, John Jay added another game to the win column with a 89-72 win over the Cougars.

The win is the sixth straight victory for the Bloodhounds over their Crown Heights-based foes.

John Jay picked right back up where it left off on Wednesday after shooting a season-high 52.5% against a conference opponent in the win over CCNY. The Bloodhounds were up five within the first minute,  Jeremiah Cardi opened the scoring with the first three-pointer of the game and Jordan Evelyn hit a pull-up jumper on the next trip down the floor.

The Bloodhounds were 5-8 from the field in the first 3:03. Evelyn led the way with six points as the home side jumped out to a 13-5 lead.

After Medgar Evers' Jonathan Grimsley pulled the Cougars within one possession, TJ Chisolm connected for his first triple of the game with 14:17 to play in the first half to extend the Bloodhound lead.

The Cougars' excessive fouls caught up to the visitors down the stretch, committing 11 first-half fouls and giving the Bloodhounds 14 free throws. John Jay was 10-14 from the line in the opening 20 minutes, hitting eight more free throws than Medgar Evers.

Adrian Kopec and Keyshawn Miller hit a pair of threes as part of an 8-2 run in just over two minutes that put the Bloodhounds in command, 32-20, with 6:04 remaining in the half. The Bloodhounds hit seven of their 16 three-point attempts in the opening frame.

Despite continued offense from the Cougars in the final minutes before half, back-to-back three-pointers by Chisolm and Cardi helped ensure a 45-35 Bloodhound lead at the break.

Syl Granda and Cardi led the way for the Bloodhounds with eight points each. Emmanuel Adenekan got the crowd jumping at The Doghouse after halftime with a slam in the opening minute.

Medgar Evers pulled within six points, but a block from Adenekan and a Miller fast-break bucket at the other end helped restore the double-digit Bloodhound advantage at the 15:38 mark.

After benefiting from the three-pointer in the first half, the home side crashed the glass in the final 20 minutes. The Bloodhounds hit 11 of their 23 shots in the paint after halftime.

Stewart fueled the Bloodhound offense down the stretch scoring (14+) of his 19 total points in the second half, including both of the team's two three-pointers.

The two sides were largely even in the second half, with the Bloodhounds riding their ten-point halftime lead. John Jay shot a season-high 38 free throws by the final horn, matching a season-high with 26 made shots.

The Bloodhounds closed with an 89-72 win, matching their second-highest point total this season. John Jay improved to 13-5 with the win, sitting at 6-1 in CUNYAC play. They hold sole possession of second place in the conference standings after the win over Medgar Evers.

Four Bloodhounds ended the game in double-digits, led by Stewart with 19 points. The sixth man for head coach Ryan Hyland is now averaging 16.4 points per game for the season.

Emmanuel Adenekan matched his career record with 8 blocks, finishing just short of a triple-double. The Bronx native and Medgar Evers transfer finished with 9 points, 8 blocks and 11 rebounds.

NEXT UP: The Bloodhounds kick off the second half of their CUNYAC schedule on Tuesday, Jan. 28 with the final leg of their three-game home stand. York makes their annual trip to The Doghouse for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off.
