Women's Basketball Four Game Win Streak Halted On The Road At Hunter On Friday

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team saw its four-game win streak halted on Friday evening as the Bloodhounds fell to the Hunter College Hawks, 71-50. 

Two Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by senior guard Ashley Zeolla, who finished with her second double-double of the season, tallying a team-leading 14 points while pulling down a career-high 17 rebounds, 11 of those coming on the defensive end. 

The Yorktown Heights, NY, product added four steals, two blocks, and an assist in 39 minutes of play.

Sophomore forward Michaela Lattimore tallied ten points on 3 of 4 shooting while dishing out three helpers.

Three Hawks finished in double-digits, led by Alexa Charles, who poured in a game-high 25 points on 9 of 19 shooting. She registered a double-double, finishing with 10 rebounds and adding six steals, four blocks, and two assists. 

Katie Burke tallied 14 points while hitting on 5 of 9 from the field and 4 of 7 from long range. Erin Cosio added 13 points while achieving a personal milestone, converting her 1,000th career point.

The Bloodhounds opened the contest on a 15-3 run, capped by a Briana Minick layup. Lattimore and Natalie Simonds combined for ten points during the run. John Jay hit on 6 of their first 10 shots while the Hawks were limited to just one made field goal, a three by Cosio at 7:54.

The visitors extended their lead to 21-9 following a made free-throw by Ayanna Edwards.

The Hawks finished the quarter on a 7-0 run, with Charles hitting a driving layup with eight seconds left. John Jay converted 47.1 percent from the field in the opening ten minutes, while Hunter hit 31.3 percent. 

Hunter commenced the second quarter on an 8-1 run, taking a 24-22 lead as Burke hit her first three-pointer at 6:28.

Zeolla tied the game with two makes from the charity stripe before Charles hit a stepback jumper to give the Hawks a 26-24 lead. The Bloodhounds answered back with an 8-3 run of their own, regaining the lead at 32-29 after Hadja Bah rattled in a jumper with 22 seconds left.

Gianna Henriques banked home a layup just before the end of the quarter, with John Jay holding a 32-31 lead.


The two teams traded buckets to open the second half, as Zeolla hit a floating jumper off the feed from Bah, tying the game at 36.

Hunter used a 9-0 run to build their lead to 45-36 on a Charles layup. Zeolla stopped the run with a layup before the Hawks closed the frame, scoring nine of the final 14 points in taking a 54-43 lead.

The Hawks connected on 61.5 percent from the field in the third quarter while limiting the visitors to just 27.8 percent.

John Jay narrowed the margin to 57-47 on a Morgan Kimmi layup three minutes into the fourth quarter.

Hunter finished the game on a 14-3 run to remain undefeated in CUNYAC play despite shooting 2 of 7 from the field over the final 6:14.

John Jay held a 50-35 edge on the boards, including a 23-8 margin on the offensive glass.

The Bloodhounds will open the regular season's final month on Tuesday when they travel to Baruch on February 4.
