Women’s Hoops Drops A Back-And-Forth Conference Tilt At Baruch, 69-66

Zeolla And Lattimore Record Double-Doubles On Tuesday Evening

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team fought valiantly throughout the night, as senior Ashley Zeolla and sophomore Michaela Lattimore each produced double-doubles, but it wasn't enough as the Bloodhounds dropped a close 69-66 road decision at Baruch on Tuesday evening.

This is the second time this season that Zeolla and Lattimore registered double-doubles in the same contest. Both Bloodhounds finished the game with 23 points.

Lattimore grabbed 14 rebounds, nine coming on the offensive end, while Zeolla added 13 caroms, nine coming on the defensive glass.

Zeolla played 39 minutes while going 5 of 7 from the line and added two blocks and a steal. Lattimore logged 31 minutes while going 3 of 3 from the line and contributed a block and steal.

Briana Minick added six points. Hadja Bah grabbed eight rebounds, dished out two assists, and had three steals. Ayanna Edwards joined Bah with three steals while distributing a team-high six helpers and grabbing six boards.

Mia Castillo, who entered the contest as the NCAA Division III leading scorer at 28.1 points per game, tallied a team-high 23 points on 7 of 24 shooting from the field and 3 of 7 from three-point range. She added eight assists, five steals, a block, and four rebounds.

Lola Idir added 13 points on 5 of 17 shooting, which included a 3 of 14 stretch from long range. D'Andre McRae was the third Bearcat in double-figures, finishing with 12 points and nearly had a double-double, coming up with nine rebounds.

Castillo drained a jumper in the paint before Zeolla hit a deep corner two-pointer, tying the game in the early portion. The Bloodhounds continued to find second-chance points as Bah collected the offensive rebound and hit the floating jumper in the paint to give the visitors a slim 6-4 advantage at the 6:17 mark.

The two teams hit a scoring drought before Minick corralled the offensive board and converted the putback jumper in the paint, as John Jay led 8-6 with 3:58 left to play in the first quarter.  Castillo dialed a triple, and McRae followed up with a layup as the Bearcats went 11-8. Minick halted the Baruch momentum, hitting on both attempts from the free-throw line, cutting the deficit to one, 11-10.

Alexis Jones gave the Bloodhounds a 12-11 as she pumped faked her defender in the corner and buried the baseline jumper. Zeolla banked in a layup while drawing contact as she completed the three-point play, extending their lead to 17-13.

Both teams converted six field goals in the first quarter, while John Jay held a 15-8 edge on the glass.

Idir started the scoring for the Bearcats to commence the second quarter, hitting a three-pointer from Bacarella that brought Baruch to within one, 17-16. Castillo hit a driving layup as the home team regained the lead at 18-17. Natalie Simonds hung in the air and banked home a layup, as the back-and-forth scoring continued by both teams, as John Jay claimed a 21-18 edge.

Both teams continued to exchange points, but the Bearcats used a 14-8 run over a 6:25 span to regain the lead, 32-29, following another three-pointer from Idir.
Zeolla made one of two from the line, cutting the Baruch lead to two, 32-30 before Castillo knocked in a pair from the line to end the quarter.

Both teams couldn't find their rhythm to start the third quarter, as Lattimore powered in a layup twenty seconds into the frame, which cut the lead down to 34-32. Baruch went on an 8-2 run to increase their lead to 42-34 after Elissa Leung hit her first basket of the contest at the 4:46 mark of the third. Zeolla knocked in a hook shot in the paint that stopped the Bearcat run before Castillo drilled a jumper on the other end, pushing the lead back to eight, 44-36.

The Bloodhounds responded with a 14-7 run to close out the third quarter, as Jones banked a three-point from the right win as John Jay trailed 51-50 heading into the fourth quarter.

Baruch rattled off five straight points to open the fourth quarter, increasing their lead to 56-50. John Jay answered with five consecutive points of their own, as Zeolla followed up her missed shot before getting fouled, banking home the layup, and completing the three-point play at the line.

Castillo hit from the outside on the ensuing Baruch possession, as the Bearcats went ahead 59-55 at the 5:51 mark. Leung followed up with a corner three-pointer as the lead swelled to 62-55.

John Jay roared back on a 7-2 run as Simonds banked home a three-pointer before Lattimore scored the following six points, giving the visitors a 66-64 lead. Castillo stopped the run with a three-pointer with 1:31 left to play in regulation, as Baruch took a 67-66 lead.

Both teams struggled down the stretch, as the Bloodhounds misfired on three attempts before Lattimore grabbed an offensive rebound, and the Bloodhounds asked for time.

Following the timeout, the nation's leading scorer, Castillo, had a chance to increase Baruch's lead but couldn't hit on a step-back jumper as John Jay grabbed the loose ball and called for time.

The Bloodhounds worked the ball into the paint, but Lattimore couldn't convert on the layup, and Baruch had it with just four seconds left. When play resumed, John Jay fouled Castillo, who made both attempts, as Baruch led 69-66.

The Bloodhounds called their last timeout to advance. The ball was inbounded to Zeolla, who had a look in the corner, but the shot was offline as Baruch escaped with the three-point victory.

John Jay shot 36.1 percent from the field, while Baruch converted 31.6 on their two-point attempts. The Bearcats hit 25.0 percent from deep (7 of 28), while the Bloodhounds went just 2 of 11.

Both squads shot an identical 85.7 percent from the charity stripe (12 of 14) while John Jay controlled the boards, 56-44.

The Bloodhounds return home on Saturday, February 8, as they welcome the Brooklyn College Bulldogs on Play4Kay Day.
