Men's Basketball Moves To 2-0 In CUNYAC Play After Outlasting York, 99-93, In Overtime

Jamaica, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team improved to 2-0 in CUNYAC play following a thrilling 99-93 overtime road triumph at York on Wednesday evening. 

The Bloodhounds, who move to 9-4 on the season, had five players score in double figures, led by Keyshawn Miller, who netted a team-high 21 points on 8 of 21 shooting. The Yonkers, NY native recorded his third double-double of the season, finishing with 15 rebounds. Additionally, he dished out six assists and swiped four steals.

Jamir Stewart scored 20 points off the bench, including a crucial shot with 0.8 seconds left in regulation.

Miller was fouled but missed both free throw attempts. Stewart
swarmed in for the loose ball and threw up a prayer that banked in off the window just before the buzzer went off, sending the game to overtime.



The Baldwin, NY product shot an efficient 5 of 10 from the field while hitting 8 of 11 from the line. He grabbed nine rebounds, dished out three assists, and added a steal in 25 minutes of play. 
Isaac Holmes netted 18 points off the bench, hitting 6 of 14 from three-point range in 30 minutes. Jordan Evelyn also produced a double-double, scoring 12 points while converting 8 of 16 from the charity stripe and corraling ten rebounds. The senior guard also distributed a season-high seven helpers.

TJ Chisolm was the fifth Bloodhound to score in double-digits, finishing with 11 points on 3 of 6 shooting from the floor, hitting a trio of three-pointers in his 17 minutes of play.

Five Cardinals (2-9; 0-2 CUNYAC) also had five players score in double-figures, with three players eclipsing the 20-point plateau. Aidony Nivar led the way with 22 points on 5 of 11 shooting and 4 of 7 from three-point range. He converted 8 of 9 from the line. Brandon Barrett recorded a triple-double, finishing with 21 points on 8 of 14 shooting, grabbed 14 rebounds, and dished out 10 assists in 43 minutes of play. Michael Litchfield finished with 20 points on 6 of 9 shooting display while hitting 3 of 5 from the outside. Bryan Godette and Demitrius Gould concluded the contest, scoring 13 and 10 points on a combined 10 of 16 shooting from the floor.

James Bradberry got the scoring going for the visitors, muscling in for two on the low block after receiving the pass from Granda. 
Miller followed up with a jumper before Litchfield hit a three-pointer for York to halt the momentum. Emmanuel Adenekan banked home a layup at the 16:45 mark. Over the next two minutes, York erupted on an 11-0 run, capped by a turnaround jumper by Barrett, as the Cardinals led 14-6.

The Bloodhounds showed resilience in their comeback, scoring a 21-12 run over the next 5:40 and taking a 27-26 lead. Holmes was instrumental, scoring nine of the 21 points during this stretch. John Jay closed the opening half outscoring York, 13-10, with Jordan Evelyn hitting one of two from the line, giving the visitors a 40-36 advantage heading into the locker rooms. The Bloodhounds shot 31.9 percent from the field in the opening half, while York converted 41.2 percent. The visitors took advantage of their chances from the outside, hitting 41.2 percent (7 of 17). John Jay held a 28-18 margin on the boards, highlighted by a dominant 11-3 edge on the offensive glass. The Bloodhounds had 13 second-chance points in the first half to York's two.

York opened the second half with five straight points from Nivar, giving them a 41-40 lead before Evelyn connected on the driving layup. On the ensuing Cardinals possession, Gould connected for three, as York went ahead 44-42 before Miller tied the game up with a layup on the other end.Over eight minutes, York outscored John Jay, 20-14, as the Cardinals converted 6 of 13 from the field to take a 64-56 lead following two made free throws by Rohan Singh.

John Jay responded with a 9-0 run over the next 80 seconds, reclaiming the lead at 65-64. Litchfield's three-pointer then pushed York ahead, 67-65, on the next possession. The two teams went back and forth down the stretch, with the Cardinals outscoring the Bloodhounds 19-16 over six minutes to take an 86-81 lead after Singh hit one of two from the line.

Free throws proved to be a deciding factor as both teams had a couple of misses before Evelyn sank the front end of a two-shot foul at the 1:44 mark, with John Jay down 87-83. Barrett missed a pair for York, and Syl Granda was able to convert on the layup off the Evelyn pass with under a minute remaining in regulation. 

Following a John Jay timeout, Singh misfired on a three-pointer that Miller grabbed. Singh subsequently fouled Stewart with 21 seconds. Stewart made both and tied the game at 87. Nivar answered with a pair of makes on the other end, giving York a two-point edge. 

John Jay took another timeout with seven seconds to draw up a play. Chisolm inbounded the ball to Evelyn and got it right back as he raced across the timeline toward the left wing and handed it off to Holmes, who launched a three-pointer that hit the back iron. Miller was able to get a hand on it in a last-second effort and was fouled on the attempt by Malakai Clark.

Miller stepped to the line as his first attempt hit the back iron. His second attempt ricocheted off the backboard, with Stewart able to corral the loose ball and throw up the circus shot that rattled in just before the buzzer sounded. 

York struck first in the extra session on a jumper by Litchfield. Holmes, who had the strong first half, dialed up a three-pointer from Miller to give John Jay a 92-91 lead with 2:04 left to play in the first overtime. Barrett turned the ball over as Miller collected his fourth steal and was fouled. He sank both attempts this time, extending the visitors lead by three, 94-91.

On the next Cardinals' possession, Nivar misfired on a three-point that would have tied the game, but Miller came away with his eighth defensive rebound of the night. Stewart hit a driving layup that extended the lead to 96-91 with 1:04 left to go. Singh was fouled and hit both attempts, trimming the deficit to one possession, 96-93, with 51 seconds on the clock.

Evelyn was sent back to the line, where he converted both attempts as John Jay held a 98-93 advantage with 38 seconds remaining. The Cardinals had a look at a three, but Singh's shot was off target and found the hands of Stewart, who concluded the game by hitting one of two from the line. 

For the game, John Jay hit 35.2 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from three-point range. The Cardinals converted 46.9 percent from the floor and shot 37.5 percent from long distance. Both teams eclipsed 60.0 percent from the free-throw line. The Bloodhounds held a 53-40 edge on the boards, highlighted by a 22-6 margin on the offensive glass.

John Jay returns home on Saturday, January 11, as they will take on Hunter at The Doghouse at 3:00 p.m.
