Jamaica, NY - Senior guard Ayanna Edwards propelled the John Jay offense in the first half, while sophomore forward Michaela Lattimore spearheaded the second offense as the Bloodhounds earned their first CUNYAC win of the season, defeating the York College Cardinals, 63-29, on Wednesday evening.
Both Edwards and Lattimore finished with 18 points apiece. Lattimore recorded her sixth double-double of the season, grabbing a career-high 17 rebounds, 11 of those coming on the offensive glass in 21 minutes of action.
Senior guard
Ashley Zeolla netted eight points while filling up the stat sheet, grabbing seven caroms, matching a career-high five steals, dishing out three assists, and recording a block.
Alicia Gumbs led all scorers with 22 points. Beautifull Earth tallied five points while Madison Plaza had two points.
The Bloodhounds opened up the contest with Minick hitting a corner three-pointer off the feed from Zeolla before Gumbs scored York's first basket. John Jay embarked on a 9-0 run over the next 3:13, building a 12-2 lead following a layup from Lattimore off the dish from Bah. Gumbs halted the run with a jumper before Simonds converted on a pair of free throws.
Gumbs continued to power the Cardinals' offense with a mid-range jumper before Richardson answered on the other end with a jumper of her own after getting the pass from Lattimore as the Bloodhounds led 16-6 after one-quarter of play.
York came out with six straight points, as Gumbs converted on the driving layup to cut into the John Jay lead, 16-12. John Jay turned up the defensive pressure, and Edwards continued to find her rhythm, going on a 9-0 run by herself to increase the John Jay lead to 25-12 before Earth hit on a jumper to stop the run.
The Bloodhounds' offense continued to thrive with Edwards spearheading the efforts, as she hit her 15th point of the contest on a three-pointer.
Essence Richardson added a layup after finishing the give-and-go with
Briana Minick as they took a 30-14 lead into the break.
The Bloodhounds shot 35.5 percent in the opening half and 44.4 percent from the outside, with Edwards going 3 of 5 in the opening 20 minutes.
John Jay opened the third quarter like they opened up the contest, as Minick hit a deep corner two-pointer.
Earth made one of two from the line before Lattimore and Zeolla hit on back-to-back possessions, increasing the lead to 36-15. John Jay closed the frame, scoring 12 of the final 17 points of the stanza, as Lattimore netted six. Coming off the bench, Alexis Jones hit a three-pointer just in front of the Bloodhounds' bench to push the lead to 48-19.
The visitors opened up the fourth quarter with another bucket by Edwards, her 18th of the contest. Gumbs continued to pace the Cardinals' offense with a driving layup at the 7:32 mark. The Bloodhounds scored nine of the next 13 points, capped by a Lattimore layup that extended the lead to 59-24. Plaza hit a pair of free throws, starting a brief 5-0 run by York. John Jay rebounded with four straight points, capped by a floating jumper by Richardson, as the visitors went ahead 63-29.
The Bloodhounds shot 30.0 percent for the game while holding a 52-26 edge on the boards. John Jay's defense held the Cardinals to just 24.4 percent shooting, turning 33 mishaps into 26 points.
The Bloodhounds return home to the Doghouse on Saturday, January 11, as they will square off against Hunter College.
