Women's Soccer Opens Title Defense With Shutout At Lehman, 4-0, On Saturday Afternoon

Bronx, NY - The defending CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) champions, the John Jay women's soccer team, commenced conference play on Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 shutout victory over last season's tournament runner-ups, the Lehman College Lightning at the Lehman College South Field.

With the victory, the Bloodhounds move to 6-2-3 overall and 1-0-0 in league play, while the Lightning falter to 0-9-0 on the season and 0-1-0 in conference action.

For John Jay, this marked the seventh shutout of the season as the Bloodhounds are 6-0-1 in those contests.

Additionally, today's result marks just the second time this season that John Jay has held its opponent without a shot attempt during the fixture. The tenacious Bloodhounds' defense also held St. Joseph University - Brooklyn without a shot attempt back on September 8 in a 3-0 triumph.

John Jay controlled play throughout, outshooting Lehman 31-0 (16 shots on goal). Lehman's Katelyn Rice made 12 saves on the day.

Ava Lopez notched the first of her two goals, scoring six minutes into the contest, and with a minute left in the contest, to give her a team-leading six goals. The Saint Paul, MN native nearly had a hat-trick, but her penalty kick attempt ricocheted off the crossbar.

Sofia Soler notched her second goal of the season in the 31st minute, while Anna Wehr found the back of the net off the feed from Yamile Bastidas for her first goal of the season.

Lopez finished with a team-high nine shots, four on target, and the two goals. Soler added six shots (four on target) and her goal.

The Bloodhounds registered five corner kicks to Lehman's zero, and both teams were charged with eight fouls during the contest.

John Jay returns to the pitch on Wednesday, October 15, as they will host Brooklyn College on Randall's Island - Field 74.

Kickoff is set for 6:45 p.m.
