Women's Volleyball Victorious Over Hunter In Five-Sets In CUNYAC Title Rematch

New York, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team battled back after being down 2-0 to remain unbeaten in CUNYAC play, as the defending league champions posted a 3-2 come-from-behind road triumph at Hunter on Tuesday evening in a rematch of the last two championship matches.

John Jay moves to 13-3 overall and a perfect 3-0 in league play, while Hunter falters to 4-16 and 1-2 in conference matches.
 


 



Tonight's win also marks back-to-back victories at the Hunter Sportsplex, as John Jay claimed its first-ever league title a season ago after previously being 0-38 against Hunter all-time.

Five-time CUNYAC Player of the Week, Jadyn Orava, led the way with 23 kills in 56 total attacks, finishing at .232 for the evening. The Gilbert, AZ native added two assists, one ace, and posted her eighth double-double, adding 10 digs for 24.0 points.

Emilia Cascapera registered her first double-double of the season, finishing with a season-high 17 kills and 10 digs for 20.5 points. The Peekskill, NY native also swatted five blocks in the victory. 

Madison Mullan and Nina Bongiovanni each had seven kills while Mullan served up two aces. Reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Week Adrienne Xiao tallied 36 assists, seven digs, and a kill. At the net, Alex Overkamp posted six total blocks, limiting Hunter's attack. Meanwhile, Lizbeth Martinez anchored the defense with 11 digs from the back row.

Lily Mattison and Amina Moummad each had 12 kills while Moummad recorded a double-double, adding 13 digs to her ledger. Natalie Morrill led the Hawks with 14 digs.

In the opening set, both teams exchanged points before Hunter used a 6-1 run to take a 16-12 lead, as Michele Liu recorded the ace for the Hawks. John Jay rattled off three straight points, thanks to back-to-back aces from Hailey Waugaman, trimming the deficit to 16-15. Hunter closed out the set on a 9-2 run to claim the first point of the match.

The Bloodhounds found themselves down in the early portion of the second set, 5-1. The Hawks doubled up their lead, 14-7, following a kill from Vera Montalbano. John Jay answered back with an 8-3 run, cutting the Hunter lead down to 19-17. Liu added two more aces, upping the lead to 23-17 before Cascapera added a kill that kick-started a response by the Bloodhounds. John Jay scored four of the following five points before Moummad killed the rally, putting Hunter ahead 2-0.

In the third set, the Bloodhounds seized on the early momentum, taking a 5-1 lead, capped by an Overkamp kill. John Jay took a six-point lead, 10-4, before a five-point run from Hunter got the home team to within one, 10-9, on another ace from Liu. From there, it was all John Jay, getting on the board with a 14-4 run, as Cascapera soared high for the kill. For the set, the Bloodhounds had 16 kills and just three errors to Hunter's nine kills and six errors.

In the fourth set, the Hawks rebounded, opening up an 8-3 lead after two straight mishits from the visitors. Kassidy Cruz Nuesi got the kill for the Hawks, increasing the lead to 16-11 before the Bloodhounds mounted their comeback with five straight points, thanks to another pivotal kill from Bongiovanni, tying the set at 16-16. Hunter was two points away from closing out the match, 23-21, after a kill from Mattison, but Madison Mullan gave possession back to the Bloodhounds and concluded the set with an ace to set up a deciding fifth set.

Hunter came out swinging in the fifth set, taking an early 6-2 lead before the momentum shifted in the defending champions' favor. Mullan served up another ace to get John Jay within one, 6-5. Two straight attack errors from Hunter gave John Jay an 8-7 lead before the two teams switched sides. Bongiovanni broke the 9-9 tie, and Mullan added another kill, extending the Bloodhounds' lead to 11-9. Cascapera put the finishing touches on a stellar evening, recording a kill that established match point and winning it for the Bloodhounds with an ace.

John Jay returns home to the Doghouse on Thursday, October 16, as they will host Baruch at 6:00 p.m.
