BACK-2-BACK: Women's Volleyball Claims Second Straight CUNYAC Title After Completing Fourth-Set Comeback To Best No. 3 Brooklyn

New York, NY - The defending CUNYAC women's volleyball champions, the John Jay College Bloodhounds, were down 14-6 in the fourth set to No. 3 seed Brooklyn. The Bloodhounds mounted a remarkable comeback to upend the Bulldogs, earning the program's second straight CUNYAC title, besting Brooklyn 3-1 (22-25; 25-18; 25-16; 27-25) at Arc Arena on the campus of Baruch College on Friday evening.

In the process of securing the program's second league title, John Jay matched the program's all-time win total with 23 victories, joining the 1997 squad. Brooklyn's season comes to a close with a 14-16 overall record.


Newly minted CUNYAC Player of the Year, Jadyn Orava, led the way for the Bloodhounds with a double-double, finishing the championship match with 25 kills and 21 digs while also recording two aces.


Emilia Cascapera tallied 13 kills. Hailey Waugaman finished with 12 digs. Lizbeth Martinez also had 12 digs to go along with five assists. Adrienne Xiao notched 44 assists, five aces, and 11 digs. Rookie of the Year Madison Mullan recorded nine kills, three aces, and two blocks.


Saule Okeke-Ziburkus paced Brooklyn with 12 kills and seven digs. Ruti Joshi had 15 digs and seven assists, while Malia Reyes added 12 digs and two aces.


Brooklyn jumped out to a 5-2 lead before the Bloodhounds rallied back in the opening set with four straight points, capped by an ace from Xiao to make it 6-5. The Bulldogs regained the lead, 16-12, following a kill from Olive Carroll. The Bloodhounds went on a 7-1 run to take an 18-17 advantage. The Bulldogs scored the following five straight points to retake the lead, 22-18, but John Jay continued to get back into the contest as Xiao doubled up on the aces to trim the deficit to one, 22-21. Brooklyn closed out the set scoring three of the final four points, thanks to a kill from Okeke-Ziburkus.


Both teams traded points in the early part of the second set before Orava recorded two straight kills to give John Jay a 5-3 lead. Later on, Ayatallah Elkotby evened the set at 13 before the defending champions rattled off four consecutive points on an Orava ace. John Jay closed the set out with four straight points, as Mullan posted the kill to even the set at 1-1.


It was a back-and-forth third set as the two teams exchanged the lead. A service ace from Theresa Schmitt created separation, as the Bloodhounds led 10-7. A 9-5 run from John Jay, capped by an ace from Orava, had the Bloodhounds lead 19-12. John Jay scored six of the final ten points in the set as Orava's kill put the Bloodhounds in prime position to clinch their second straight CUNYAC title.


Brooklyn led by as many as nine points in the fourth set and led 24-20 while serving to force a deciding fifth set. The Bloodhounds reeled off the following four points to take a 25-24 lead on a Brooklyn attack error. Back-to-back kills from Cascapera closed out the set and the match, giving John Jay the come-from-behind win to capture the league's title.


Following the match, the league announced its All-Tournament Team, with Orava winning Most Valuable Player honors. Cascapera and Mullan joined her on the team.

John Jay will await their next opponent following Monday's selection show, which will air at 1:00 p.m. on NCAA.com.
