Rifle Proudces Several Personal Bests Against Norwich And MIT This Weekend

Northfield, VT | Cambridge, MA - The John Jay rifle team competed in two venues this past weekend, squaring off against MAC Rifle member, Norwich, and MIT.
 



John Jay 4361, Norwich 4381

The Bloodhounds split both disciplines against the Cadets, picking up a 2247-2219 win in air rifle but falling in smallbore, 2162-2114. For the match, John Jay was edged out by 20, 4381-4361 on the aggregate.

Danny Canning was the top individual shooter against the Cadets, as she finished with an aggregate score of 1112, hitting 33 centers. Canning finished second in air rifle with a 568 while hitting 23 centers and placed fourth in smallbore with a 544. 

JB Zhao eclipsed his previous best by over 30 points, as he finished second overall with a total of 1101 (30 centers). He placed sixth in smallbore with a total of 541 and fourth in air rifle at 560, hitting the center 21 times.

First-year Cassidy Derosia rounded out the top-five individual performances, as she tallied 1078 (24 centers). Derosia notched an eight-place finish in smallbore with a 527 and seventh overall in air rifle at 551 (18 centers).


Mahek Dalwala placed seventh individually with a 1059, as she took third in air rifle with a total of 567 (29 centers). Rahat Mujammil rounded out the finishes with a ninth-place performance, tallying 552 in air rifle.


Rounding out the smallbore performances was Bryan Gomez (12th | 502 | 6 centers), followed by Mahek Dalwala, who competed in her first-ever smallbore match at 492 (3 centers), and Marian Kopram at 475.

Noelia Gonzalez competed in the air rifle match, shooting a score of 539 while connecting on nine centers to place among the top-15 finishers in the discipline.

John Jay 4365, MIT 4449

On Sunday, the Bloodhounds traveled to MIT, where John Jay replicated the exact total in smallbore (2,114) they had shot the day prior. The Engineers finished at 2180. In air rifle, the Bloodhounds were edged slightly by MIT, 2269-2266 in a 2400 point match. 

Canning placed second overall, shooting a total score of 1119 while connecting on 39 centers. Dalwala and Zhao finished fourth and fifth, respectively, overall, with Dalwala totaling 1099 and Zhao shooting 1096. Derosia and Kopram rounded out the top-ten individual finishes, with Derosia notching a total score of 1066 and Kopram concluding at 1050.

Canning and Zhao placed third and fourth in smallbore, with Canning leading the Bloodhounds with a 551 (16 centers). Zhao fired a 540 (9 centers). Dalwala, Derosia, and Kopram were the next finishers, with times of 514, 509, and 508, respectively. Gomez rounded out the performances in smallbore with a 482.

Dalwala continued her impressive start to the season, as she was the top-finisher in air rifle with a 585, connecting on 39 centers. Canning placed fourth at 568 (23 centers) while Derosia and Zhao placed eighth and ninth, with totals of 557 and 556. Kopram finished the day in 11th place with a score of 542.

The Bloodhounds will be in action on Saturday, December 6, as they host the Big Apple Classic against MAC Rifle member Maritime in air rifle. 

Saturday will be the program's annual Senior Recognition match. The Bloodhounds will continue their weekend on Sunday, December 7, at the Cos Cob Range, where they will resume conference play against the University of Rhode Island and Maritime.
