Women's Basketball Late Rally Falls Short On The Road At Marywood On Saturday Afternoon

Scranton, PA -  The John Jay women's basketball team returned to the court following the Thanksgiving break against the Marywood Pacers on Saturday afternoon. The Bloodhounds trimmed a 14-point deficit down to seven with 4:41 left in the contest but Marywood scored nine of the game's final 15 points to defeat John Jay, 73-63.

Three Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by Michaela Lattimore, who registered her fourth double-double of the season, scoring a team-high 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in 27 minutes of action.

Briana Minick added 12 points while newcomer Bryan Bascones shot an efficient 4 of 5 from the field to net 11 points for the visitors. Miah Crockett finished with four points, eight rebounds, six assists, and two steals in 33 minutes.


Marywood
was paced by Olivia Ciullo, who netted a game-high 21 points on 5 of 10 shooting while hitting 8 of 8 from the free-throw line in 26 minutes of play. Alli Anstadt tallied 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Anyah Ortiz netted 13 points and had seven steals.

The Pacers held a 5-2 lead following a three from Ciullo before John Jay evened the score with a layup from Lattimore and one of two from the line from Crockett. Marywood scored five straight points to double the lead before the Bloodhounds rallied back with a 6-0 run
with Bascones hitting both attempts from the line. With under 30 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Lattimore converted the traditional three-point play from the line after banking in a layup off the pass from Natalie Simonds, giving the visitors a 16-13 advantage.

Lattimore scored the first three points to open the second quarter before Ortiz hit on a layup that tied the score at 19. Bascones converted on a jumper to give the lead back to John Jay, 21-19. Marywood staged a 10-4 run to take a 29-25 lead after Ciullo connected from the outside. The Pacers closed out the second quarter on a 10-1 run as Anstadt was able to convert the tip-in just before halftime, as Marywood led 39-26.


Midway through the third quarter, the Bloodhounds outscored the Pacers, 8-4, as Morgan Kimmi hit on a layup that cut the deficit down to seven, 43-36. Marywood closed out the quarter scoring seven points, with Megan Cavoli hitting a jumper in the paint that pushed their lead to 50-37
but Kimmi ended the quarter with a jumper of her own after getting the pass from Kailani Galan.

Marywood took its largest lead of the contest, 53-39, to start the fourth quarter. The Bloodhounds inched closer in the contest, trimming the deficit down to six, 55-49, with 7:18 left to play as Minick hit both free-throw attempts. John Jay staged another run, as Simonds connected on a three-pointer before Minick hit a jumper as the Bloodhounds trailed, 64-57, with 4:41 remaining in regulation.
Lattimore added a jumper with 2:28 left that cut the deficit further, 68-60 but Marywood extended their lead to hold on for the double-digit win.

For the game, the Bloodhounds shot 35 percent from the floor while holding a 46-36 edge on the boards. Marywood hit on 39 percent from the field and hit on 22 of 29 from the free-throw line.


John Jay will be back on the court
on December 3 as they travel to the University of Saint Joseph for a 5:00 p.m. tipoff.
