Jamaica, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team trailed by two at halftime, and when play resumed, the York College Cardinals opened the second half on an 11-0 run as the Bloodhounds dropped the road conference tilt, 68-53, on Thursday evening.
With the setback, the Bloodhounds stand at 2-8 overall and 0-2 in league play, while York improves to 2-6 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
Jamir Stewart led the Bloodhounds with 20 points while
Keyshawn Miller contributed a double-double, finishing with 13 points and ten rebounds. Both Bloodhounds are approaching career milestones, as Miller is just five points away from 1,000 career points, while Stewart will need 28 points.
York had two players score in double-figures, led by Chris Smith, who poured in a game-high 23 points on 8 of 19 shooting while going 7 of 10 from the free-throw line. He filled up the statsheet, coming one rebound shy of a double-double (9), while adding four assists, two steals, and a block. Bryce Haynes added 12 points on 4 of 8 shooting in 15 minutes of action.
The two teams traded points early on before Stewart converted on two trifectas to give John Jay a 9-4 lead. The Bloodhounds went on to outscore York, 11-8, over the next seven minutes to take a 20-12 lead after
Amare Jordan was able to convert on a layup.
York closed out the first half, hitting on 6 of 11 from the field in staging a 15-3 run to take a 27-25 lead as they limited John Jay to just one made basket in nine chances.
The Cardinals carried that momentum into the second half, opening the frame on an 11-0 run in taking a 38-25 lead. York continued to apply the intensity, limiting the visitors to just a 3 of 13 shooting display over the next 8:33 as the Cardinals' lead increased to 58-37 following a Jonte Wallace layup.
The Bloodhounds tried to mount a late comeback, outscoring York, 16-10 late, but the final buzzer sounded following a Stewart layup with 14 seconds left.
The Bloodhounds were held to just 23.6 percent shooting, while York hit nearly 40.0 percent.
John Jay returns home on Tuesday, December 16, as they will host Westfield State at 8:00 p.m., following the conclusion of the women's contest against Farmingdale State at 6:00 p.m.
