Women’s Basketball Powers Past York In Road Triumph For First Conference Win Of 2025-26

Jamaica, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team held a five-point lead after the first quarter and increased that to a 23-point advantage at the break as the Bloodhounds didn't look back in an 85-51 road win at York on Thursday evening.

The win marked the first CUNYAC win of the season for the Bloodhounds, as they improved to 2-8 on the year and 1-1 in conference play, while the Cardinals faltered to 0-7 and 0-2 in league action.
 


With tonight's victory, tenth-year head coach Lynda Day, the program's all-time wins leader, is one win shy of hitting 100 for her Bloodhound coaching career.

Three Bloodhounds finished in double-figures as both Bryan Bascones and Michaela Lattimore each scored 16 points on a combined 15 of 27 from the field. Lattimore finished with her seventh double-double of the year, grabbing 12 rebounds while Bascones added eight caroms. 

For Lattimore, this marks the ninth time in ten games she has registered double-digit rebounds.

Miah Crockett shot 6 of 8 from the field to finish with 13 points while adding four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Kailani Galan went for nine points on 4 of 9 shooting while Natalie Simonds and Briana Minick each had eight points, with Simonds dishing out a team-high seven helpers. 

Amaniya Aiken was the lone Cardinals scorer to reach double-figures, as she poured in a game-high 25 points on 10 of 28 shooting while grabbing ten rebounds for York. Tyla Hooks grabbed nine rebounds and added eight points. 

York opened the scoring with a bucket from Beautifull Earth. Still, the visitors erupted on a 12-0 run, with Lattimore and Bascones combining for ten of the 12 points as the Bloodhounds hit 5 of 8 during this span and didn't allow a York basket for nearly three minutes. Aiken added a jumper at the 5:55 mark to stop the run as York closed out the quarter outscoring John Jay, 14-9, but the Bloodhounds held a 21-16 lead after the first on Essence Richardson's layup before the buzzer. 

John Jay built upon their lead by taking control of the second quarter, using a 19-2 run to increase their lead to 40-18 following a Crockett layup off the feed from Gallan. The visitors hit on 9 of 15 from the field during the near eight-minute run, in which they held the Cardinals to just one made field goal in 15 chances. Earth hit a jumper that halted the run, but the Bloodhounds scored five of the final eight points of the quarter to take a 45-23 lead into the locker room.The Bloodhounds shot 64.7 percent in the second quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 24-7.

John Jay continued to dictate the pace coming out of the break, opening the third quarter with a 12-2 run, starting with Bascones' jumper and ending with a Lattimore jumper in the paint at the 6:41 as the lead swelled to 57-25. The visitors opened the framed shooting 60.0 percent from the field (6 of 10) while York only went 1 of 3 during this duration. The two teams cooled off a bit from the field with the Bloodhounds claiming a 67-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter. 

John Jay continued to be efficient from the field, as they outscored the Cardinals, 16-8, over a 7:30 stretch that increased the lead to 83-44 following an Alexis Jones layup. The tenacious defense forced seven turnovers over this span, while Gallan and Jones combined for half of the team's points during the run.

York's Arta Gjeloshi and Aiken scored five of the final seven points as the Bloodhounds claimed their first conference win of the season.

For the game, the Bloodhounds shot a season-high 47.4 percent from the field (37 of 78). John Jay was a plus five on the boards, holding a 56-51 edge despite being outmuscled on the offensive glass, 24-16. The visitors forced 29 turnovers and scored 30 points off those mishaps.

The Bloodhounds will return to The Doghouse on Saturday, December 13, as they will welcome the St. Joseph's University - Golden Eagles for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff.
