Men's Basketball Falls At St. Joseph's University - Long Island On Wednesday

Patchogue, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team fell on the road to the St. Joseph's University - Long Island Golden Eagles, 70-54, on Wednesday evening.

Both teams move to 2-5 on the season with tonight's outcome.
 
Jamir Stewart led all scorers with a game-high 26 points on 8 of 20 shooting from the field, connecting on four three-pointers, while going 6 of 6 from the free-throw line. The Baldwin, NY native is approaching the 1,000-career-point plateau, standing at 932.

Teammate Keyshawn Miller was the second Bloodhound in double-figures, scoring ten points while adding a team-leading nine boards, six assists, and six steals. Miller has now recorded 942 career points between Herkimer and John Jay.

Three Golden Eagles finished in double-digits, as Jaiden Gaston led the club with 19 points on 5 of 15 shooting while going 6 of 6 from the charity stripe. AJ Esposito finished with a double-double, tallying 16 points on 7 of 9 shooting, while grabbing 14 rebounds in 37 minutes of work. Matthew Maxwell added 11 points in his 24 minutes of action.
 
The Bloodhounds opened the contest on a 12-5 burst, with Stewart serving as the catalyst, scoring seven points over the first 3:25 of the contest. The Golden Eagles answered back on the strength of a 13-3 outburst, claiming an 18-15 lead, as St. Joseph's University - Long Island held the Bloodhounds to just one made field goal in 11 chances during the seven minutes.
 
The two teams traded points over the remaining 4:44 with Stewart hitting a jumper with 1:28 to go before halftime to even the score at 27.  Maxwell sank a pair of free throws to give the home team the lead back before a last-second three-point heave from Kopec was off target.

Both teams struggled to find their mark from the outside, going a combined 7 of 28 from long range, with John Jay hitting 5 of 21 in the opening half. The Golden Eagles took control of the glass, outmuscling the Bloodhounds, 21-13.

Play resumed with TayShaun Hawkins' layup and an Esposito that pushed the SJLI lead to 33-27 before Miller tallied the following five points for the Bloodhounds, as they trailed by one, 33-32. St. Joseph's triggered a 16-8 run over the next 6:19 in taking a 50-40 lead as Esposito's layup gave them the double-digit lead. During the run, the Golden Eagles hit 6 of 10 from the field while holding the Bloodhounds to 2 of 8.

Stewart hit a three-pointer to halt the SJLI run before the Golden Eagles began to put the game out of reach, outscoring John Jay, 14-5, over the next six minutes in building a 64-48 lead. The two team split the final 12 points with the Bloodhounds going 1 of 3 from the field and St. Joseph's hitting on 6 of 9 from the free-throw line.
 
For the game, the Bloodhounds were held to 32.0 percent shooting from the field (18 of 56) and 27.0 percent from three-point range (10 of 37).
 
St. Joseph's University - Long Island converted on 44.0 percent from the field (22 of 50) while converting 5 of 18 from three-point range (27.8 percent).
 
The Bloodhounds were outmuscled 38-27 on the boards while hitting 8 of 12 from the free-throw line. The Golden Eagles converted 21 of 30 from the line.
 
The defending CUNYAC champions commence conference play on Saturday, December 6, against Lehman at 3:00 p.m., following the conclusion of the women's contest.
