Men's Hoops Late Comeback Push Not Enough As Bloodhounds Fall In Conference Opener To Lehman, 69-66, At The Doghouse Saturday

New York, NY - Trailing by 16 points at halftime, the John Jay men's basketball team turned its fortune around in the second half, cutting the deficit to one with 18 seconds, but the visiting Lehman College sank two free throws at the end as the Bloodhounds fell, 69-66 in the CUNYAC opener on Saturday afternoon at The Doghouse.

The Bloodhounds fall to 2-6 overall while the Lightning move to 5-5 on the year.

Four Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by Jamir Stewart, who finished with 18 points, 11 of those coming from the free-throw line in 37 minutes. Stewart dished out a team-high six assists while swiping two steals.


Adrian Kopec tallied 16 points while hitting on 5 of 11 from the field and 4 of 8 from the outside. Ronnie McIntyre had 14 points while also converting on four three-pointers. Keyshawn Miller finished with 10 points while Rayan Meguie pulled down a team-high 11 caroms.


Ricardo Dixon paced Lehman with a double-double, finishing with 20 points and ten rebounds after shooting 8 of 14 from the field and 3 of 4 from three-point range while adding four blocks. Zay Marte netted 16 points while Kofi Mends finished with 11 points.


Lehman jumped out to a 13-4 lead after Dixon hit a three-pointer. John Jay answered back with a 10-4 run as McIntyre hit from the outside that cut the deficit to 17-14. 
The Lightning took control of the tempo for the remainder of the first half, as the visitors staged a 23-8 run to build a 40-22 lead as the Bloodhounds were held to just one field goal over the final 13 minutes of the stanza. Stewart connected on a pair of free throws to close out the scoring in the opening 20 minutes.

The Bloodhounds were limited to just five made field goals in the first half (5 of 24) while Lehman connected on nearly 40.0 percent from the field (14 of 38).

When play resumed for the second half, Dixon got the scoring going for the visitors, hitting a triple from the pass from Kesean Tracey that made it 46-26.

The defending CUNYAC champions flipped the defensive intensity on and proceeded to outscore Lehman, 28-10, over the next 11 minutes, as Kopec connected from the outside, bringing John Jay within two, 56-54.

During the run, the Bloodhounds hit on 9 of 16 from the field, including a blistering 6 of 9 from the outside, as Kopec tallied 11 points.  

Lehman responded with a 10-3 burst of its own over the next three minutes to increase the lead to nine, 66-57, as Marte connected on the layup. The Bloodhounds' comeback attempt didn't stop, as John Jay outscored Lehman, 9-1, highlighted by a pivotal three-pointer from Alsseny Diallo, who created space on the wing to drill a three that made it a one-point game, 67-66.

John Jay applied full-court pressure but was called for a foul with just 13 seconds left, with Tracey sinking a pair to push the lead to three. Following a pair of timeouts from both squads, Stewart received the inbounds pass, but Amar Ndiaye poked the ball away as Lehman hung on for the win.

For the game, John Jay shot 35.4 percent from the field, hitting 50.0 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from three-point range during the second half, when they outscored the visitors, 42-29.

The Bloodhounds are back in action on Tuesday evening, as they welcome the Manhattanville University Valiants to The Doghouse.
Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
