Women's Basketball Wins Third Straight Contest, 77-62, At CCNY On Friday Evening

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team continued their winning ways on Friday evening, earning a 77-62 road triumph over CCNY.

With the victory, the Bloodhounds improve to 10-14 overall and 8-5 in CUNYAC play, while the Beavers falter to 1-12 overall and 1-17 in league play. 

Ashley Zeolla and Michaela Lattimore each scored over 20 points in the contest, with Zeolla finishing with a game-high 23 points on 7 of 16 shooting from the field and hitting 9 of 14 from the line. 

Lattimore produced her 10th double-double of the year, finishing with 21 points and 17 rebounds, 12 of those coming on the defensive end. The Morristown, NJ native filled the stat sheet with four steals, three blocks, and two assists in 27 minutes of action. 

This marked the third game this season that both Zeolla and Lattimore netted at least 20 points in the same contest. All nine players for John Jay scored at least a point and grabbed at least two rebounds in the victory. Ayanna Edwards, Natalie Simonds, and Briana Minick each finished with seven points.

Three CCNY players scored in double-figures, led by Anais Rosa, who finished with a team-high 17 points on 6 of 20 shooting. Joscelyn Ramos added a double-double, netting 13 points on grabbing 12 caroms. Ashley Colon also finished with 13 points in the contest. 

Zeolla opened the scoring for the Bloodhounds with a layup before Ramos answered back with a layup of her own. The Beavers outscored the Bloodhounds, 11-6, over the next 6:21, taking a 13-8 lead as Morrison hit on a free throw. Zeolla stopped the run with a baby hook shot in the paint.

Kasia Morrison hit one of two from the line with 12 seconds remaining. On the final possession of the quarter, Edwards dribbled until she spotted Morgan Kimmi, who heaved a turnaround jumper that rolled in, tying the game at 14. 

Zeolla commenced the second quarter with her 11th point of the contest before Loma Romero hit a jumper that tied the game at 16. She continued to spearhead the offense, as she hit one of two from the line, giving the visitors a 17-16 advantage two minutes into the stanza. 

CCNY regained the lead, 21-20, on a Rosa triple. John Jay responded with a 6-0 run over the next 1:20 to take a 26-21 lead after Lattimore hit on two straight baskets. Ramos brought the Beavers back to within three on two made free throws. The visitors upped their advantage to 34-26 following an 8-3 burst. 

CCNY closed out the quarter on an 8-2 run as Ramos corralled the loose ball off a missed three-point from Morrison and put it home before the buzzer sounded. Both teams shot the ball significantly better in the quarter, with John Jay hitting 44.4 percent of their shots (8 of 18) while CCNY was at 38.9 percent (8 of 18). 

Zeolla led all scorers with 14 points, hitting on 6 of 8 from the line in the opening 20 minutes. Lattimore produced a double-double in 12 minutes of work, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. 

Both teams struggled to find their range early in the third quarter until Ashley Subervi banked in a layup for CCNY, trimming the deficit to one, 39-38. From that point, the Bloodhounds staged a 16-5 run, building a 12-point cushion, 55-43. John Jay shot 83.3 percent from the field (5 of 6) while hitting 6 of 9 from the line. 

Lattimore, Briana Minick, and Alexis Jones combined for 13 of the 16 points. The Bloodhounds held CCNY to just 1 of 11 shootings during this run, with Rosa scoring all five points for the Beavers.

Ashley Colon scored the first points of the fourth quarter for CCNY before Simonds drove the length of the court, drew contact, and made an acrobatic layup to increase the lead. The Durham, NH native completed the three-point play from the line as John Jay led 58-45. 

CCNY mounted a comeback, hitting back-to-back three-pointers, decreasing John Jay's lead to 58-51 at the 8:25 mark. The Beavers continued to chip into the Bloodhound lead, as Rosa hit a layup as CCNY trailed 62-56, with 5:28 remaining in regulation. Ashley Colon swished in a corner three-pointer as the Bloodhounds' saw their lead dwindle to four, 63-59.

Following a pair of free throws from Zeolla, Edwards stole the ball away from Amanda Fisher and led the fast-break, with Essence Richardson putting in the layup as the lead went up to eight, 67-59. Zeolla added back-to-back buckets, the last coming after she knocked the ball away from Ramos as John Jay capped the 8-0 and led 71-59 with 2:46 left to play. 

The Bloodhounds closed the game on a 6-2 run, with Edwards putting in the left-handed layup. The Bloodhound shot 47.3 percent from the field (26 of 55) while converting 67.6 percent from the free-throw line (25 of 37). John Jay held a 51-43 edge on the boards while turning 26 CCNY mishaps into 27 points.

The Bloodhounds conclude the 2024-25 regular season on Tuesday, February 18, as they travel to Brooklyn to tangle with the Medgar Evers College Cougars.

Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
