Men's Hoops Nets Season-High In Points While Clinching The No. 2 Seed In Upcoming CUNYAC Postseason In Road Win At Medgar Evers

Brooklyn, NY - The John Jay men's basketball concluded the 2024-25 regular season with a wire-to-wire road triumph, defeating the Medgar Evers College Cougars, 111-78, on Tuesday evening.

With the win, the Bloodhounds finish the season at 18-7 overall and 11-3 in CUNYAC play. The 18 wins are the second-most victories during head coach Ryan Hyland's tenure. The 11 conference triumphs are second-most under Hyland's watch (13 in 2019-20).

John Jay secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming postseason with tonight's win and Baruch defeating Lehman (74-55). 

Medgar Evers finishes the year 6-19 and 4-10 in league play. They will be the No. 6 seed in the upcoming postseason and face the No. 3 seed Lehman in the First Round.

The winner will move on to play the Bloodhounds on Tuesday, February 25, at The Doghouse. 

Four Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by Jamir Stewart, who netted 29 points on 10 of 18 shooting from the field and 6 of 11 from three-point range in 29 minutes of play. 

Isaac Holmes added 25 points in 27 minutes, converting 8 of 15 from the field and matching Stewart with six trifectas.

Keyshawn Miller continued filling the stat sheet, recording his sixth double-double of the year, scoring 14 points while grabbing ten rebounds. He dished out six assists while adding two steals and a block in 27 minutes of action.

Omar Calderon chipped in 13 points on 5 of 7 shooting while grabbing seven rebounds and recording two blocks.

Two Cougars reached double-figures, as Jonathan Grimsley led all scorers, finishing with 37 points and procuring 20 rebounds, 12 on the offensive side in 32 minutes. He shot 15 of 31 from the field and 7 of 8 from the free-throw line.

Andre Evans Jr. added 20 points while filling up the stat sheet, grabbing seven rebounds, distributing six assists, swiping three steals, and recording two blocks in 35 minutes.

Holmes started the game with back-to-back three-pointers before Grimsley halted the Bloodhound run with a layup for the first points by the home team. Medgar Evers scored 14 of the following 24 points as Grimsley buried a jumper to tie the game at 16.

On the next John Jay possession, Holmes remained hot from the outside, hitting on another triple to give the lead back to the visitors. 
Holmes' three-pointer commenced an 11-2 run, capped by another long-distance shot, this time by Stewart, as John Jay took a 27-18 lead.

The Cougars answered back, netting 14 of the next 23 points, and closed the deficit to 36-32 after a jumper by Grimsley. Miller converted on the layup in the paint and finished by completing the three-point play from the line, as John Jay went up 48-42 with 1:30 left to go before the break. 

Medgar Evers stayed close as Trevonne Tcha hit a three-pointer that narrowed the margin to three, 48-45. Stewart hit a pair of freebies with six seconds left in the first half as John Jay held a 52-46 edge after the first 20 minutes of play. 

Both teams shot over 40.0 percent from the field in the opening half, with the Bloodhounds converting 7 of 18 from long range. John Jay held a 23-22 edge on the boards.

Grimsley opened the scoring in the second half with a contested layup in the paint before Holmes answered with another three-pointer off the feed from Miller that pushed John Jay's lead to 55-48.

Medgar Evers got within eight, 58-50, as Grimsley netted another two points inside the paint. Jordan Evelyn started a 26-5 run as the visitor's lead swelled to 84-55 as Stewart connected again from the outside off the feed from TJ Chisolm.

Boubacar Mbaye briefly halted the run with a layup before Chisolm hit a three after getting the pass from Miller.


John Jay used a 14-4 run to increase their advantage to 98-63 following a layup by Elijah Holmes in the paint. 

Medgar Evers finished the game outscoring the Bloodhounds 15-13, but John Jay scored their highest total against the Cougars since 1988-89, when they posted a 114-70 win.

The Bloodhounds shot 47.9 percent from the field in the second half and 47.1 percent from three-point range while limiting Medgar to just 23.9 percent from the field (11 of 46) and 0 of 15 from three-point range in the second half.

For the game, John Jay converted at a 45.3 percent clip while hitting 42.9 percent from three-point range. The Cougars shot 33.7 percent from the field and 14.8 percent from long range. The Bloodhounds were a +10 on the boards (59-49).
