Baseball Opens 2025 Campaign With Doubleheader Sweep At Valley Forge

Upper Chichester, PA - The defending CUNYAC champions, the John Jay baseball team, commenced their 2025 season on the road with a doubleheader sweep of Valley Forge, defeating the Patriots, 9-3, in game one, and withstanding a late surge, 10-8, in the nightcap.

Game 1 | John Jay 9, Valley Forge 3

The lidlifter of the 2025 season was a pitcher's duel over the first four innings of a scheduled seven before the visiting Bloodhounds broke the game up with five runs in the top of the fifth, three in the sixth, and one more in the seventh to post their first win of the season, 9-3. 

Alvy Grullon went 4.2 innings, giving up six hits and two runs for the win. Marc Weeks tossed 1.1 innings before handing the ball to Sebastian Sanchez, who threw a perfect bottom of the seventh. Santo Anzalone powered the offense, going 1 for 5 with a run scored and three RBIs. Jaxen Gangwish collected three hits in five chances while scoring two runs and driving in an RBI.

Ryan Cherichella, Quentin Bowman, Ethan Simaan, Axel Kappes III, and Sebastian Sanchez all drove in an RBI, with Simaan and Kappes III scoring twice. 

Brayden Tunnell and Aaron Zapata collected two hits for the Patriots, with Aaron Gonzales being credited with the lone RBI for Valley Forge. Jack Qualteria went 4.1 innings, allowing four runs over 4.1 innings while striking out five and walking two, earning the no-decision. CJ Fernandez was saddled with the loss, giving up four runs on five hits. 

It was a pitcher's duel until the top of the fifth inning. Simaan led off the top of the fifth with a single. Kappes III was hit by a pitch before Gangwish reached on an error that loaded the bases. The next batter, Anzalone, cleared the bases with a three-run double, concluding Qualteria's afternoon. Bowman followed with an 0-2 double that plated home Anzalone as John Jay led 4-0. Bowman stole third and came into the score on an error by the third baseman that made it 5-0. 

Valley Forge got on the board in the bottom of the inning. Orndorff grounded into a double play but scored Joshua Nieberlein. The next batter, Gonzales, laced a double to plate home Carlos Terc, trimming the deficit to three. The Bloodhounds tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth. Kappes III started the frame with a one-out RBI double before coming into score on a Gangwish single. Cherichella plated his first RBI of the season, sending a hard-hit single that plated Gangwish from third, increasing the lead to 8-2.

Valley Forge got one back, as Zapata stole second and came into score on an error by the catcher. Simaan lofted a sacrifice fly to left that plated home Sanchez, who started the seventh with a single as John Jay upped the lead to 9-3.

Sanchez came on to pitch for Weeks. He got the first two batters out before allowing a single to Tunnell. Sanchez regained his composure and induced the game-ending grounder.

Game 2 | John Jay 10, Valley Forge 8

In game two, the Bloodhounds jumped to a 6-0 lead before increasing their lead to 10-0 at the end of six. Valley Forge rallied back with a run in the bottom of the inning and narrowly completed the comeback with seven runs in the bottom of the seventh, but John Jay held on for the 10-8 win. 

Kappes III threw five shutout innings, surrendering just three hits while striking out three for his first win of the season. Sanchez picked up the save, the first of his tenure with John Jay. Hayden Tackett drove in three RBIs, while Anthony Agosta collected three hits in the contest and drove in a pair of runs. Anzalone added two more hits, as did Sanchez and Isaac Salazar. 

Gonzales recorded three hits while driving in two RBIs. Orndorff added two hits and drove in a pair. Noah Lara went two innings, giving up four runs on two hits in taking the loss. 

John Jay struck for three runs in the opening inning. Gangwish was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. Anzalone singled to give the Bloodhounds a pair of runners. Cherichella doubled, scoring Gangwish from second for the first run of the ballgame. Following a hit-by-pitch to Bowman, Sanchez drew a bases-loaded walk for the second run of the inning. With the count in his favor at 2-1, Anthony Agosta flew out to left field, bringing in Cherichella as John Jay led 3-0. 

Lucas Perez started the second inning by reaching on an error. He moved to second on a fielder's choice and stole back-to-back bases, including a successful steal of home, giving the Bloodhounds a four-run cushion. In the top of the third, John Jay added two more runs as Tackett tripled, scoring Sanchez from third. Agosta connected on an RBI single that knocked Josh Garcia out of the game. Kappes III continued to thrive on the mound, recording his third scoreless inning. 

In the top of the fifth, the Bloodhounds continued to add to its lead, as Salazar delivered an RBI double for the seventh run of the game, and Perez added an RBI single that made it 8-0. In the top half of the sixth, John Jay tacked on two more scores, as Bowman connected on an RBI single that plated home Anzalone before Tackett sent an RBI double, scoring Bowman. 

The Patriots got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as Gonzales delivered an RBI single. Valley Forge commenced a late comeback, forging sevens in the bottom of the seventh as they drew three walks before Orndorff connected on a two-run double that cut the John Jay lead in half, 10-5. Tunnell brought in another score before Gonzales continued his hot hitting, tripling home Orndorff, which made it 10-7.
Juan Lopez flew out to right field, scoring Gonzales as Valley Forge continued to stage their comeback, trailing 10-8. 

Sanchez got Qualteria to ground out, ending the game and completing the opening-day sweep. 

The Bloodhounds return to the field on March 5 as they will travel to Rowan for a 3:30 p.m. first-pitch.
