Throggs Neck, NY - The John Jay baseball team took an early 2-0 lead on Maritime before the Privateers erupted for five runs in the bottom of the second and tacked on eight more in the bottom of the fourth as the Bloodhounds suffered their first loss of the season, 17-5.
Quentin Bowman led the way for the visitors, going 4 for 5 with three runs scored. CUNYAC Rookie of the Week,
Sebastian Sanchez, collected three RBIs. Newcomer
Mark Piri added two RBIs.
Alvy Grullon took the loss after throwing three innings, giving up seven runs on five hits while walking three and striking out three.
David Granucci powered the Privateer offense, going 3 for 4 with three runs and driving in six RBIs. John Carollo added three RBIs. Andrew Heiderstatdt earned the win, tossing five innings in which he yielded just two runs on three hits, walking two batters and striking out 11 batters.
Ryan Cherichella was hit with an errant pitch with two outs in the Bloodhounds first. Bowman sent a single to left before both runners advanced on a passed ball.
The reigning Rookie of the Week, Sanchez, brought in the game's first runs, sending a double to right center field.
Maritime sparked a five-run bottom of the second. Logan Martinson led off the frame with a single to left before moving to second on a passed ball.
Former Bloodhound
John Spallin drew a walk before Owen Weber loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch. Carollo cleared the bases with double to left, as the Privateers went up 3-2.
Two batters later, David Granucci connected on a two-run home run, upping the lead to 5-2. In the bottom of the fourth, Maritime continued to add to its lead, scoring eight runs on five hits, with Granucci coming through for the home team, clubbing his second home run of the day, a grand slam to right as Maritime extended the lead, 13-2.
In the top of the sixth, Bowman led off the inning with a double to right center before stealing third. Sanchez lofted a deep fly to left, as Bowman tagged up to score.
Maritime continued to add one, as Ryan Wood connected on a RBI grounder to short, making it 15-3 before a dropped fly by the Bloodhounds RF brought home two more the Privateers, increasing the lead to 17-3.
The Bloodhounds scored a pair in the final frame as Piri doubled to left center.
The scheduled road contest at Rowan has been postponed for tomorrow, March 5.
John Jay will turn their attention to Friday, March 7, as they are set to welcome Old Westbury for a doubleheader, beginning at noon.
