Baseball Stages Pair Of Walk-Off Victories Over Yeshiva On Sunday Afternoon

Brooklyn, NY - The John Jay baseball team posted walk-off victories through wild pitches on Sunday afternoon, winning both games over Yeshiva by a 6-5 count.
The Bloodhounds move to 5-2 on the season, while the Maccabees fall to 0-6.

Game One | John Jay 6, Yeshiva 5 (8 innings)
The Bloodhounds sparked a four-run bottom of the second and held the lead until the visiting Maccabees rallied for five runs over the sixth and seventh innings.
John Jay scored the tying run in the seventh and ultimately the winning run in the bottom of the eighth, posting a 6-5 win.

Marc Weeks earned the start, going 5.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits while walking four and striking out six while not factoring in the decision. Saujan Christie came on in relief, surrendering three runs on four hits. Tyler DeStefano (1-0) earned the victory, tossing two shutout innings while giving up one hit and striking out a batter. 

Quentin Bowman went 3 for 5 with a run scored and drove in four of the five runs, highlighted by his first home run of the season. Ryan Cherichella and Axel Kappes III each had two hits, with Cherichella adding an RBI. 

Jake Arnow led the Maccabees with three hits, while Aharon Weiden drove in two RBIs. Jacob Canner lasted 3.1 innings, giving up four runs on six hits while walking five, and didn't factor in the decision. Weiden took the loss after tossing what turned out to be the game-winning, walk-off wild pitch. 

Following a scoreless first inning, John Jay erupted for four runs in the bottom of the second. Anthony Agosta led off the inning with a walk before Ethan Simaan singled to center. Kappes III walked to load the bases.

Canner settled into strikeout Jaxen Gangwish and got Santo Anzalone to line out to third. The sixth batter in the inning, Cherichella drew a four-pitch walk, plating the game's first run. 
The next batter, Bowman, doubled to left center, clearing the bases, giving John Jay a 4-0 lead. 

The score remained that way until Yeshiva got on the board at the top of the sixth. Noam Ouanounou reached on a fielding error by Weeks before Mendy Kanofsky walked. Noah Steinmetz singled to center field to load the bases. Weiden drew a walk that plated the first run for the Maccabees. With one out in the inning, Reven Hellman also drew a walk that scored the second run. 

The Maccabees took the lead on three more runs, 5-4. Ouanounou sent a first-pitch single to center, scoring Arnow. Steinmetz drew a walk that tied the game at 4-4. Christie issued a second straight walk to Weiden as Yeshiva went up 5-4. DeStefano came on and got the final three outs in the inning. 

On the first pitch in the John Jay seventh, Bowman clubbed the game-tying solo homer. DeStefano gave up a triple to Arnow with the game knotted at 5-5. The next pitch to Jacob Shakin, he lined out to Cherichella in left, but Arnow assumed the ball dropped and sprinted for the plate. Cherichella threw the ball in, and John Jay doubled up Shakin for the second out. DeStefano recorded the inning-ending strikeout. 

In the bottom of the inning, Gangwish reached after being hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a wild pitch. The next batter, Anzalone, walked before Cherichella reached on a bunt single. Weiden airmailed a pitch that hit the backstop, but Gangwish was able to cross the plate for the win. 

Game Two | John Jay 6, Yeshiva 5 (9 innings)
In the nightcap, the two teams were pitted in a similar situation before Gangwish reached first, and Mark Piri crossed the plate as John Jay earned the sweep of Yeshiva, 6-5. 

Anzalone had three hits and drove in three RBIs. Danny Opramolla earned the start, lasting four innings. Sebastian Sanchez worked the final four frames, striking out six in picking up the win. 

Bowman continued his hot-hitting approach, sending an RBI sacrifice fly to right.  Yeshiva took the lead in the top of the second, scoring twice, which Weisman flew out to left, plating Canner.  Simaan grounded into a 6-4-3 double in the bottom of the second, but Hayden Tackett trotted in from third, tying the game at 2-2.
Later in the frame, Anzalone singled to left field, scoring Kappes III, pushing John Jay lead to 3-2. 

In the fourth, the Maccabees scored twice, including the go-ahead run off the bat of Arnow. In the bottom of the frame, Anzalone sent an RBI single to left, bringing in both Gangwish and Kappes III. The Maccabees rallied and evened the game at 5-5 on an RBI double by Shakin in the top of the sixth.

The score remained that way until Gangwish swung over the top of strike the, but the ball trickled to the backstop as Piri beat the throw, giving John Jay the win.
