Baseball Loses Midweek Game At The College Of New Jersey

Ewing, NJ - The John Jay baseball team fended off a 4-1 deficit by scoring five times in the top of the sixth, but The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) Lions scored five times in the bottom of the frame and tacked on five more in their half of the seventh as the Bloodhounds dropped a 14-8 decision on Wednesday afternoon.

Santo Anzalone produced two hits in the contest, while Axel Kappes III drove in three RBIs for the visitors.

Starter Sean Jost went four innings, giving up four runs (one earned) over six hits while yielding two walks and striking out five batters.  Julio Reyes (0-2) was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs on one hit while walking three.

TCNJ's Mike LaGravenis and Justin Marcario each had three hits while driving in three RBIs. Zach Hochheiser and Jack O'Donnell also contributed three RBIs apiece in the win.

Gianni Marano went five innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out three and not factoring into the decision. Jack Marchese earned the win for the Lions.

John Jay got on the board first. A pitch hit Jaxen Gangwish to lead off the contest. Ryan Cherichella sent a grounder to shortstop that advanced Gangwish a base.

The next batter, Anzalone, sent a hard-hit single through the right side as Gangwish raced around the bases for the contest's first run.

Following a scoreless second inning, the Lions got on the board with two in their half of the third. LaGravenis reached on an infield single and reached third base following two successful steal attempts.

Marano reached on an error by the Bloodhounds' second baseman that scored LaGravenis. Hochheiser followed with a single up-the-middle, giving TCNJ runners on the corners with one out. Marcario lofted a fly ball to right field that plated in the second run of the inning.

TCNJ plated across two more in the bottom of the fourth, extending their lead to 4-1 on the two-run single off the bat of O'Donnell.

The score remained that way until the top of the sixth, when the John Jay bats erupted for five runs in the frame, taking a 6-4 lead. Gangwish singled to center before stealing second. With the count even at 2-2, Cherichella brought in Gangwish with an RBI single to left field, cutting the deficit in half, 4-2.

Anzalone doubled down the left field line that moved Cherichella to third, and ended Mike Silver's afternoon. Marchese came on and issued a walk to the first batter he faced, Sebastian Sanchez.

Following a strikeout, Agosta was plunked by a pitch, scoring Cherichella, as John Jay trailed 4-3.
Two batters later, Kappes III, who was down in the count, cleared the bases with an RBI triple to right center, giving the Bloodhounds their first lead since the first inning.

The Lions responded with a five-run burst of their own as Reyes walked three straight batters before LaGravenis cleared the bases with a double to left field as TCNJ regained the lead, 7-6.

Craig Zuckerman came on for Reyes and struck out O'Donnell before giving up an RBI single to Marano, making it 8-6 in favor of the Lions. Marcario added an RBI single to left that made it 9-6.

TCNJ continued to add to its lead, tacking on five more runs in the bottom of the seventh, going up 14-6, as Hochheiser delivered the big hit in the frame, a three-run triple down the right field line.

The Bloodhounds tried to come back. Mark Piri sent a two-out, first-pitch triple to right field before Gangwish walked. Cherichella reached on an error by the shortstop that plated home both runners before Anzalone popped up to second, ending the game.

John Jay will gear up for their weekend non-conference clash with the University of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday, March 15.

The first pitch is slated for noon.
