Baseball Drops Non-Conference Twinbill Against Mount Saint Vincent On Saturday

Bronx, NY - The John Jay baseball team played their first game of the year at Houlihan Park on the campus of Fordham University, dropping a heartbreaking 8-7 decision in game one before falling 9-2 in the second game to the University of Mount Saint Vincent.

The Bloodhounds fall to 5-5 on the season, while the Dolphins move to 5-2.

Game 1 | John Jay 7, Mount Saint Vincent 8

The Bloodhounds opened up game one of the twinbill trailing 1-0 after one but sparked a seven-run bottom of the second. The Dolphins clawed back with a run in the third and fifth, producing five runs in the top of the seventh to upend the Bloodhounds, 8-7.

Jaxen Gangwish led the way for the Bloodhounds with three hits while driving in an RBI. Sebastian Sanchez and Axel Kappes III each had two hits. Ryan Cherichella had two RBIs in the contest. Alvy Grullon went six innings, giving up three runs on nine hits while not factoring in the decision. Sanchez gave up five runs (three earned) while walking one in two-thirds of an inning in taking the loss. 

Four Dolphins had two hits - Dom Porto, Joshua McCormick, Pablo Austin, and Zach Turko. McCormick and Joey DiNorcia each drove in two runs. Luke Buyes lasted on 1.2 innings, giving up all seven Bloodhound runs on six hits. Shawn Ryan tossed 3.1 shutout innings on three hits while striking out three. Ryan Sharkey picked up the win, tossing a scoreless inning while Nicholas Rodriguez earned the save. 

Porto led off the game with a triple to left center field before coming into score on a McCormick double to center. The Bloodhounds rallied back with seven runs in the bottom of the second on six hits to take a 7-1 lead. Sanchez led off the inning with a double to right center before Hayden Tackett walked. Anthony Agosta, down in the count, was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

The next batter, Ethan Simaan, lofted a deep fly to left that plated home Sanchez and tied the game at 1-1. Kappes III reloaded the bases with a single to center. Gangwish took a first-pitch fastball back up the middle as John Jay took a 2-1 lead.  Cherichella was next up and, with the count at 0-2, ripped a double to center field, plating two runs. 

The big inning continued with an Anzalone sacrifice fly to right before Quentin Bowman doubled to left, upping the lead to 7-1.
John Jay batted around as Sanchez had walked before UMSV went to the bullpen. Shawn Ryan came on, and Tackett sent a double down the right-field line, capping the seven-run frame. 

UMSV got one back in the top of the third as McCormick continued his hot hitting, sending a double to left center, cutting the deficit down to 7-2. In the top of the fifth, the Dolphins added another run as Jason Albert clubbed a solo home run to left. 

The Dolphins threatened in the top of the sixth. Connor Martin walked and moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt by Grullon. Turko singled to left to give the visitors runners on the corner. On a 2-0 pitch, Grullon escaped danger as Porto grounded into the inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.

Sanchez came on for the top of the seventh. McCormick walked, and a pitch plunked Albert to give the Dolphins two runners on. Will Granata pinch hit and reached on a fielding error by Tackett to load the bases. The next batter, DiNorcia, roped a double to left center, scoring two as UMSV cut the lead down to 7-5. 

Austin followed with an RBI single as the comeback was in full effect for UMSV. JT Jimenez grounded out to second as DiNorcias scored, tying the game at 7-7. Austin advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring the go-ahead run on a Turko double to left center. Marc Weeks came on for Sanchez and struck out Porto to end the inning.

Sharkey plunked Agosta with a pitch before being lifted for Rodriguez. Rodriguez got Simaan to fly out to short before Kappes III singled, giving the Bloodhounds two runners. Gangwish fouled out to the catcher before Rodriguez got Cherichella to swing on a slider to end the game. 

Game 2 | John Jay 2, Mount Saint Vincent 9
The teams returned to the diamond for game two as the Dolphins claimed an early 1-0 lead before John Jay scored twice in the bottom of the third. UMSV scored eight runs over the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings in claiming the 9-2 victory. 

The Bloodhounds mustered just two hits in game two while the Dolphins pelted 17 hits. Anzalone and Isaac Salazar had the hits for the Bloodhounds, with Salazar driving both of John Jay's runs. Kappes III lost after giving up six runs on 11 hits over four innings. Danny Opramolla gave up three runs on five hits in two innings. 

All nine Dolphins had at least one hit, while JT Jimenez had four hits. John Anthony Spanoudakis had two hits and drove in a team-high three RBIs. DiNorcia had two RBIs. Joseph Santos went three innings, giving up both Bloodhounds' runs while walking five and striking out two. Gerjuan Tyrus earned the win, throwing three scoreless innings while striking out five.

The Dolphins got on the board in the top of the second on a Turko two-out RBI double to left center.In the bottom of the third, Cherichella drew a one-out walk while Anzalone singled up the middle. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch before Sanchez walked. Salazar ripped a two-run single to left field as the Bloodhounds claimed the lead.

UMSV evened the score in the top of the fourth. Spanoudakis led off the inning with a solo shot to left center field. The Dolphins opened the game with six runs in the top of the fifth. Jimenez singled before moving to third on a Granata double.

UMSV took the lead on an RBI single from Austin. DiNorcia sent a single down the right field line, extending the lead to 5-2.

Opramolla came in for Kappes III. Following a steal from DiNorcia, Martin singled to center, giving UMSV runners on the corner. Spanoudakis sent a sacrifice fly to center, upping the lead to 6-2. 

Turko singled to right before a walk to Porto. McCormick singled to right, scoring Martin before Jimenez brought in Turko on a sacrifice fly to left, giving the Dolphins an 8-2 lead.

The Dolphins added another run as Spanoudakis sent another sacrifice fly to left, scoring DiNorcia, making it 9-2.

The Bloodhounds will be back in action on Saturday, March 22 at Manhattanville
