Sandel Records 200th Career Hit: Bloodhounds Sweep Scranton On Thursday Afternoon

Scranton, PA - The John Jay softball team recorded their first sweep of the 2025 season as the Bloodhounds defeated the University of Scranton Royals, 7-4 in game one and 5-2 in the second game.
The Bloodhounds now stand at 3-1 on the season, while Scranton suffered their first two defeats and fall to 4-2.

Game 1 | John Jay 7, Scranton 4

The Bloodhounds opened up the contest with two runs in the first inning before the Royals answered with three in the bottom of the fifth. John Jay staged a five-run top of the seventh to comeback and hold on for the 7-4 game one win.

Lindsay Ogden tossed her second complete game of the season, giving up four unearned runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out five for her first win. Maleea Gallaspy had three hits, while Kelly Fajardo drove in two RBIs.

In the five-run seventh inning, senior Rylea Sandel reached a career milestone, as the Deer Park, TX native recorded her 200th career hit, an RBI single up the middle.

Alyssa Mosconi led the way for the Royals with three hits and drove in three RBIs.
Emma Douglas tossed four innings, allowing two unearned runs on two hits while walking one and striking out three. Carley Noble was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs on five hits.

Following a scoreless first inning, the Bloodhounds got on the board in the top of the second. Alyssa Cadolino reached on a fielding error before Douglas settled to get the next two batters out. A walk to Angelina Schoelles, followed by a passed ball, allowed both runners to move into scoring position. Fajardo ripped a single down the left field line that scored both runners, giving John Jay the early lead.

The score favored John Jay until the bottom of the fifth. Alexa Bruno reached on a fielding error by Sandel before moving to third on a wild pitch. A walk to Kylie Rochford gave the Royals their first run of the game as Bruno scored on the wild pitch. The next batter, Mosconi, uncorked a two-run home run that gave Scranton a 3-2 lead.

Scranton held the lead until the top of the seventh. Sidney Bankston led off the frame with a double down the left-field line. Natalie Graham pinch-hit for Schoelles and ripped a single to left center, scoring Bankston to tie the game at 3-3. After a sacrifice bunt moved Graham to second, Gallaspy stepped in and connected on an RBI single to left, giving the visitors a 4-3 lead. The next batter, Elika Rodrigues, added a single through the left side, plating Gallapsy as John Jay went up by two.

Scranton went to the bullpen and brought in Alli Babino. She gave up the milestone hit to Sandel, much to the excitement of her teammates as John Jay went up 6-3. Two batters later, Olivia Paoli reached on a fielder's choice as the Bloodhounds upped their lead to 7-3.

The Royals got one back in the bottom of the seventh as Mosconi sent a double down the left field line. Ogden rebounded and got the final three outs to preserve the win.

Game 2 | John Jay 5, Scranton 2
In game two, the Bloodhounds continued their scoring prowess, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after five. The Royals climbed back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but John Jay added two scores in the top of the seventh in holding off for the 5-2 win. Graham moved to 2-0 on the season and finished her second complete game, giving up two runs on eight hits while striking out three.

Kendal Bryant had three hits while scoring two runs, while Paoli drove in two RBIs. Sandel added another hit, moving her career total to 201.

Celia Totaro, Rochford, and Mosconi each had two hits for the Royals, with Toatro driving in the lone runs. Kiley Mullins took the loss, giving up the two runs on two hits over 2.2 innings despite striking out five batters.

Similar to the first game, both teams were scoreless after one before the Bloodhounds struck first in the top of the second. Paoli and Bankston each walked before advancing a base on the sacrifice bunt from Fajardo. Gallaspy struck out swinging but reached first on a passed ball as Paoli crossed the plate for the first run. A wild pitch brought in Bankston, giving John Jay a 2-0 lead.

The Bloodhounds tacked on one more in the top of the fifth as Bryant led off with a double, and Cadolino drove her in with a single to left.

Bruno led off with a single in the bottom of the frame before Totaro connected on a two-run home run to left, cutting the deficit down to one, 3-2.

John Jay created separation in the top of the seventh as Paoli doubled down the left field line, scoring both Cadolino and Bryant. Graham worked around potential trouble in the bottom of the inning. Rochford led off with a single to right before Mosconi singled up the middle. Rochford was thrown out trying to get to third on a strong throw from Fajardo. Emily Feltenberger singled to left to give Scranton runners on second third. Graham got Hannah Keane to fly out to left before striking out Hailey Poskonka to end the game.

John Jay will head to Allentown, PA, to tangle with Cedar Crest on Saturday, March 15, with the first pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
