Baseball Drops Doubleheader At Manhattanville On Saturday

Purchase, NY - The John Jay baseball team dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Manhattanville, falling 9-1 in the opener and 15-7 in the nightcap.

With the results, the Bloodhounds fall to 5-7 on the year while the Valiants move to 9-4.

Game 1 | John Jay 1, Manhattanville 9

The Bloodhounds managed three hits in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader as Manhattanville scored all nine runs between the second and fifth innings in posting a 9-1 victory. 

Ethan Simaan had two hits for the Bloodhounds, while Hayden Tackett had the other hit in the game. Alvy Grullon (1-2) took the loss after tossing three innings, giving up five runs (three earned) while walking three and striking out two. 

Michael Luongo worked two innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out three. Fernando Sladky worked a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.

Chris Goohs and Jackson Branigan each had three hits for the Valiants, with Branigan driving in three RBIs and scoring two runs. 
Jake Warnock tossed three innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits while walking three and striking out 12 batters.

Anthony Mezzaucella sent a one-out double to left field, plating across the game's first run. A sacrifice fly from Dylan Roberts brought in Branigan as the Valiants went up 2-0.

Manhattanville tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third. Following a double by Goohs and a single by Gregory Tashik gave the Valiants runners on the corners as Branigan reached on an infield single.

Grullon struck out the next two batters before Branigan advanced to second, and Tashik scored after stealing third on a throwing error. Roberts added an RBI single to left center, making it 5-0 in favor of Manhattanville. 

Luongo came in for Grullon in the bottom of the fourth and struck out the first batters he faced. Branigan cleared the bases with a two-run RBI single to center field, upping the Valiants' lead to 7-0. 

The Bloodhounds got on the board in the top of the fifth as Jaxen Gangwish reached on a fielding error by the Manhattanville third baseman, which plated home Anthony Agosta, who started the frame with a walk.

The Valiants added two more scores in the bottom of the frame on an RBI grounder by Joshua Gillison before Goohs singled to right center, scoring Joseph McDonald.

The Bloodhounds staged a rally, as Sebastian Sanchez reached first after being hit by a pitch and Tackett drawing a walk. Both runners moved into scoring position, but Agosta flew out to end the inning.

Game 2 | John Jay 7, Manhattanville 15

In the second game of the twinbill, the Bloodhounds jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before the Valiants staged a five-run second inning.

The Bloodhounds continued to add to their total with three runs in the top of the third, tying the game at 5-5 and going ahead with two more in the top of the fourth.  

Manhattanville answered back with three in the bottom of the fourth and posted a seven-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth in taking a 15-7 win.

Marc Weeks took the ball in game two, lasting 1.1 innings, giving up five runs on three hits while walking five and striking out a batter. Danny Opramolla was tagged with the loss after going 2.2 innings, giving up five runs on three hits while walking four. 

Santo Anzalone went 2 for 3 with three runs scored and drove in three RBIs. Sanchez added a hit and two RBIs, while Isaac Salazar was also credited with an RBI.

Goohs led the way for the Valiants with three hits and drove in five RBIs. CJ Archul had two hits and matched Goohs with five RBIs. Ryan Costa, who came on in relief of starter Ryan Osso, earned the win after throwing 3.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and walking two.

Gangwish led off the inning with a walk before Anzalone doubled to right center, plating Gangwish for the contest's first run. Sanchez doubled to left center, bringing in Anzalone, as John Jay went ahead 2-0.

The Valiants staged a five-run bottom of the second. Mike Ambrosecchia singled through the right side before Justin Encarnacion reached on an infield single to first. A one-out walk to McDonald loaded the bases for Gillison, who plated the first run for the home as he drew a walk. The next batter, Archul, cleared the bases with a double to left, as Manhattanville went up 4-2. Opramolla came on and issued an RBI single to Goohs as the Valiants went up by three.

The visitors narrowed the gap as Anzalone clubbed a two-run home run. Quentin Bowman singled before moving to second. Tackett reached first on a throwing error by the shortstop as Bowman scored, tying the game at 5-5.

John Jay regained the lead in the top of the fourth. Ryan Cherichella recorded a two-out single before stealing second. Anzalone was intentionally walked before Bowman was hit by a pitch that loaded the bases. Sanchez also walked, giving John Jay a 6-5 lead.  

Costa came on for Osso and issued a walk to Salazar as the Bloodhounds went ahead, 7-5. In the bottom of the inning, the Valiants regained the lead as Goohs delivered a three-run home run to center field, as Manhattanville took an 8-7 lead. 

The Valiants added seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth, as the big hits came from Gillison and Archul, each doubling, with Archul bringing two that upped the lead to 12-7.

Goohs continued his big afternoon, singling to left field, as the Valiants went up 13-7. The home team added two more runs to secure the 15-7 win.

John Jay closes the weekend on Sunday as they will host Mount Saint Mary College at Heritage Financial Park, the home of the Hudson Valley Renegades.
