Softball Wins Sixth Straight Contest In Sweep Of NJCU

Jersey City, NJ - The John Jay softball team continued their winning ways on Tuesday afternoon, posting an 8-1 and 8-2 victory at New Jersey City University. The Bloodhounds move to 7-1 on the season, while the Gothic Knights falter to 8-4.

The John Jay softball team opened up their doubleheader non-conference tilt at NJCU with two runs in the first inning before adding five more across the third and fourth innings, securing an 8-1 victory.
CUNYAC Pitcher of the Week Lindsay Ogden recorded her fourth complete game of the season, giving up just one run on four hits while walking two and striking out eight batters. 

Rylea Sandel continued her hot-hitting approach, going 3 for 3 with three runs scored. Alyssa Cadolino went 2 for 2 with three RBIs, while CUNYAC Player of the Week Kendal Bryant, Maleea Gallaspy, Olivia Paoli, and Kelly Fajardo each drove in an RBI. 

Alonah Olden, Meaghen Doyle, Mya Villanueva, and Abby Castro all had a hit for the Gothic Knights, with Villanueva driving in the lone RBI for NJCU on the afternoon. Danika Borza was tagged with the loss after going four innings, giving up seven runs (five earned) with three walks. 

In the Bloodhounds' first, Sandel reached on a two-out single to right center field. Bryant drew a walk before both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Cadolino ripped a single to center, bringing in both runners for the game's first runs. John Jay tacked on a run in the top of the third to go up 3-0. Sandel again started with a two-out single before Bryant followed with a single back up the middle. Cadolino walked to load the bases for Paoli, who came through with an RBI single to center, extending the visitors' lead to 3-0. 

NJCU notched their only run of the contest in the bottom of the inning, Ogden struck out the first two batters of the frame before Olden and Doyle singled. Villanueva singled to right center, scoring Olden. Ogden got an inning-ending grounder. 

The Bloodhounds sparked a four-run top of the fourth. Sidney Bankston opened the frame with a single to right field. Genon Thomas reached on a throwing error, and both runners moved into scoring position. Bryant doubled down the left field line that scored Bankston, upping the lead to 4-1. Following a walk to Elika Rodrigues, Gallaspy singled to center, scoring Thomas. Sandel was hit by a pitch before Bryant reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Rodrigues, making it 6-1. Cadolino closed the frame with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Gallaspy. 

John Jay's final run of the contest came in the top of the sixth as Sandel clubbed her first home run of the season and 16th of her Bloodhound career.

Game 2 | John Jay 12, NJCU 5

The Bloodhounds carried the momentum from game one into the nightcap of the doubleheader, plating across five runs over the second, third, and fourth innings in building a 5-2 advantage before plating across a total of seven runs in the sixth and seventh in posting a 12-5 triumph. 

Natalie Graham moved to 4-0 on the season after recording her fourth complete game, as she allowed five runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out three batters. Six Bloodhounds produced multi-hit games, led by Sandel, who went 3 for 4 with 5 RBIs. Rodrigues, Gallaspy, Cadolino, Paoli, and Fajardo each had two hits. 

Elyze Lopez took the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out a pair. Emily Cammarata led the way for NJCU with three hits. Villanueva had a team-leading three RBIs. 

Following a scoreless first inning, John Jay got on the board in the top of the second. Bryant led off the stanza with a walk. Cadolino reached on a fielding error, but Bryant was forced out at second. Paoli sent a single to left that gave the Bloodhounds two runners on with one out. The next batter, Angelina Schoelles, singled to center to load the bases. Fajardo singled through the left side with two outs, scoring Cadolino for the game's first run. With Rodrigues at the dish, all the Bloodhound runners moved up a base on the passed ball as Paoli scored, giving John Jay a 2-0 advantage. 

NJCU got their first run of the contest in the bottom of the inning as Abby Castro connected on a solo home run. Graham struck out the next two batters before issuing a walk to Emma Grochowski. Emma Hanlon grounded out to third, ending the frame. 

The Bloodhounds added a run in the top of the third, increasing their lead to 3-1 on the RBI double from Sandel, who scored Gallaspy, as she led off the inning with a double down the left field line. The visitors continued to pile up the runs, adding two more to their ledger, going up 5-1 in the fourth. Bankston pinch-hit for Thomas and drew a walk. With two outs, Sandel added two more RBIs on a double to left field.

NJCU continued to fight their way back as Jordan Mendolla clubbed a solo home run. 


Following a scoreless fifth inning, John Jay scored three more times as Sandel added to her RBI total, sending a single to right field that made it 6-2. Cadolino produced an RBI single that scored Rodrigues and Gallaspy, who came around on a fielding error by the left fielder to make it 8-2.

The Bloodhounds staged a four-run top of the seventh, building a 12-2 lead. Bankston and Fajardo connected on one-out singles to centerfield to start the inning. Rodrigues singled to left and moved to second on the throw back into the infield, with Bankston scoring John Jay's ninth run. Gallaspy poked a single through the left side that scored Fajardo before Sandel notched her fifth RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly to right, plating home Rodrigues. With Bryant in the batter's box, Gallaspy came into score on a wild pitch. 

NJCU got the first two batters on base with two straight infield hits back to Graham. With two outs and runners on second and third, Villanueva connected on a three-run home run, cutting the deficit to 12-5, but Castro flew out to left to end the ballgame. 

John Jay will head to Sarah Lawrence on Thursday, March 20, for a 3:30 p.m. start.
