Softball Falls To No. 25 Ramapo, Snapping 12-Game Win Streak

Mahwah, NJ - The John Jay softball team saw their season-high 12-game win streak end on Wednesday afternoon, as the Bloodhounds fell to No. 25 ranked Ramapo, 13-2 and 13-5. 

The Bloodhounds now stand at 13-3, while the Roadrunners move to 12-1 on the season.

Game 1 | John Jay 2, No. 25 Ramapo 13

The Bloodhounds trailed after two innings, 6-0, before scoring their first run in the top of the third, but it wasn't enough. John Jay fell by a 13-2 count. 

Maleea Gallaspy and Rylea Sandel each had two hits in the opener. Kendal Bryant and Olivia Paoli added a hit. Gallaspy and Bryant plated an RBI for the visiting Bloodhounds. 

Lindsay Ogden took the loss, lasting 2.1 innings, giving up ten runs (six runs). Kiki Iglesias came on in relief, tossing 1.2 innings, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out a batter.

Ramapo's Katie Rygiel and Avery Kontura each had three hits, with Kontura driving in four RBIs. Rebecca Airel and Alex Hastings each had two hits, with Hastings adding three RBIs. 

Marissa DiPaolo won after going four innings, giving up one run on five hits while walking one and striking out one.

Sandel sent a two-out double left center for the game's first hit but was stranded. In the bottom of the frame, the Roadrunners scored thrice. Kontura came around to score on a wild pitch. Hastings singled up the middle, scoring Airel and pushing Ramapo's lead to 2-0. Hannah Hensler sent a hard-hit grounder to short that scored Ysabellah Otero. 

Ramapo added three more runs in the bottom of the second. Kontura doubled to left center that scored Rygiel. With the bases loaded, Hastings drew a walk to plate the fifth run before Airel scored on a wild pitch. 

John Jay got on the board in the top of the third as Gallaspy clubbed her third home run of the season. The Bloodhounds threatened as Sandel and Bryant singled but were left on base as Cadolino flew out to left, ending the inning. 

Ramapo sparked a four-run bottom of the third, extending the lead to 10-1. A double steal brought in the seventh run of the game before Kontura doubled in Rygiel.

The next batter, Airel, singled to right center, scoring Kontura. Hastings continued her hot approach, doubling down the left field line, but was thrown out at third.

Ramapo added three more in the bottom of the fourth to go up 13-1. In the top of the fifth, Gallaspy singled followed by a walk to Jordyn Prince. Sandel grounded out to advance both runners.

The next batter, Bryant, flew out to center, scoring Gallaspy for the game's final run.

Game 2 | John Jay 5, No. 25 Ramapo 15

John Jay got on the board first in the second game before Ramapo scored three runs over the first two innings. The Roadrunners added four more in the bottom of the fourth to go up 7-1 but John Jay rallied back with four in the top of the fifth. Ramapo tacked six runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 13-5 winner. 

Cadolino went 3 for 4 for the visiotrs with an RBI. Prince and Bryant had two hits, with Bryant driving in two RBIs. 

Prince reached a milestone in this contest, posting her 100th career hit. 
 


Natalie Graham was tagged with the loss, her first as a Bloodhound.

Kontura led the way for Ramapo with three hits. Rygiel, Otero, Hastings, and Emily Reilly had two hits, with Rygiel plating home three RBIs. Kassy Stefanski picked up the win after going 4.2 innings before handing the ball to Brooke Knights, who earned the save. 

The Bloodhounds scored first. Prince sent a one-out single to left field. Bryant followed with an infield single back to the pitcher. With two outs, Cadolino worked the count, 2-2, after seeing nine pitches and doubled to right field, scoring Prince for the game's first run. 

Rygiel led off the Ramapo first with a single through the right side. With one out, Airel sent a single through the left side. Rygiel came in to tie the game on an RBI single from Hastings. 

The long ball proved pivotal for Ramapo in the bottom of the second as Rygiel connected on a two-run shot to left, giving the Roadrunners a 3-1 advantage. Following a scoreless third, Rampao added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Two straight wild pitches brought two runs for the Roadrunners in the bottom of the fourth.

Kontura doubled to right field, plating the sixth run of the game. Airel walked, and Otero doubled to left field, bringing in Kontura as the Roadrunners took a 7-1 lead. The Bloodhounds staged a four-run top of the fifth. Kelly Fajardo singled to center field to lead off the stanza. 

Sandel sent a two-out double to center field, scoring Fajardo. The next batter, Bryant, took the first pitch she saw over the left field wall, as John Jay cut the deficit down to three, 7-4. 

Cadolino and Paoli had back-to-back hits through the left side, ending Stefanski's afternoon. Knight came on and issued a single to single by Graham, which loaded the bases for the Bloodhounds. The next batter, Sidney Bankston, drew a four-pitch walk as the Ramapo lead dwindled to two, 7-5.

Batting around, Fajardo reached on a fielder's choice to third base, but Graham was forced out at third, ending the threat. With two outs in the top of the sixth, the Bloodhounds got two straight walks to Sandel and Bryant, but both runners were left on base as Cadolino flew out to center. 

The Roadrunners put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six times on five hits. Kori Gargiulo singled through the right side that scored Murphy, making it 8-5. Hensler was hit by a pitch, scoring Otero, upping the lead to 9-5. 

Hastings came in to score on a wild pitch, doubling the Roadrunners lead to 10-5. A walk to Lia Milsom scored Gargiulo before a sacrifice fly from Rygiel brought in Hensler.

The game's final run came off the bat from Kontura, who singled to center, scoring Reilly.


The Bloodhounds return to the field on Sunday, March 30, as they will travel to Saratoga Springs, NY to take on Skidmore College.

First-pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
