Softball Sweeps Brooklyn Commencing CUNYAC Play On Wednesday

Brooklyn, NY - The two-time defending CUNYAC softball champion John Jay's softball team opened up CUNYAC play on Wednesday, defeating the Brooklyn College Bulldogs, 10-0 and 9-1.

The Bloodhounds move to 15-3 and 2-0 in the conference, while the Bulldogs fall to 8-11 and 0-2.

Game 1 | John Jay 10, Brooklyn 0

The Bloodhounds scored four runs over the first two innings and continued to add six over the next two innings, picking up a five-inning, 10-0 triumph in the conference lid-lifter.

Natalie Graham continued flourishing inside the circle, pitching her eighth complete game of the season, throwing a one-hitter without allowing a run, walking two, and striking out three for her eighth win.

Maleea Gallaspy, Rylea Sandel, and Sidney Bankston each had two hits, with Alyssa Cadolino and Graham driving in two RBIs for the visitors.

Zoey Van Vleet had the lone hit for the Bulldogs. Danielle Guzzardi was tagged with the loss, giving up ten runs (eight earned) on 11 hits while walking four.

Gallaspy led off with a double and moved to third as Jordyn Prince reached on a fielder's choice. Sandel grounded out to short, scoring Gallaspy for the game's first run. The next batter, Kendal Bryant, grounded out to second, scoring Prince for a 2-0 lead.

The Bloodhounds tacked on two more runs in the top of the second. Graham sent a one-out single to center before scoring on a Bankston triple to left center. Gallaspy singled to center with two outs, scoring Bankston as John Jay jumped out in front, 4-0.

In the bottom of the inning, with one out, Van Vleet doubled on a 2-1 pitch.

John Jay scored three times in the top of the third. Bryant led off with a triple to right before coming into score on the RBI ground out by Cadolino. Olivia Paoli doubled to left field before scoring on a fielder's choice from Graham, making it 6-0. Graham scored two batters later on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the inning, Brooklyn tried to stage a rally. Melanie Millan reached on an error before Paige Alaia-Palacios walked. Lianna Gonzalez and Dasha Goodman flew out to end the threat.

Sandel led off the fourth with a single and promptly stole second. Bryant walked before Cadolino notched another RBI, sending a single to center field that made it 8-0. Graham reached on a fielder's choice with one out that brought in Bryant. A walk to Bankston brought up Kelly Fajardo, who singled as the Bloodhounds went ahead 10-0. 

Graham needed four pitches in the bottom of the fifth to put the finishing touches on the one-hitter.

Game 2 | John Jay 9, Brooklyn 1

The Bloodhounds carried that momentum into game two, as John Jay scored nine runs on 10 hits in defeating the Bulldogs, 9-1, in the nightcap.

Lindsay Ogden moved to 6-2 on the season after earning her seventh complete game of the year and tenth for her career. The Loxahatchee, FL native allowed just one run on two hits while walking three and striking out three.

Cadolino had three hits and three RBIs, while Bryant went 2 for 2 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Gallaspy and Prince added an RBI for the visitors.

Vida Rodriguez and Aaliyah Vargas had the lone hits for the Bulldogs. Molly Martin took the loss for Brooklyn.

With two outs in the top of the first, Cadolino delivered the game's first runs, sending a double to left center as Bryant and Prince scored.

Following a scoreless second, John Jay tacked on two more runs in the top of the third. Sandel sent a one-out single to left before Bryant clubbed her team-leading sixth home run as the Bloodhounds led 4-0. 

Ogden faced a bit of trouble in the bottom of the fourth, Gonzalez was hit by a pitch. Dasha Goodman reached on a fielder's choice, forcing Gonzalez out at second. Rodriguez flew out to end the frame.

Both teams were held off the scoreboard in the fifth before John Jay opened the scoring with five runs in the top half, upping their lead to 9-0.

Bankston led off with a single. Gallaspy doubled home Fajardo with two-outs as John Jay took a 5-0 lead. Prince reached on a fielding error by the third baseman and moved to second while Gallaspy scored on the play. 

Sandel walked to get to Bryant, who cleared the bases with a two-run double to left center as John Jay led 8-0. The next batter, Cadolino, singled home Bryant for the nine-run cushion.

Brooklyn got their lone run in the bottom of the sixth. Rodriguez sent a deep fly to center as Alaia-Palacios tagged up and scored. Van Vleet grounded out to end the contest.


John Jay continues their road trip with a trip to Salisbury, MD, on Saturday, as they will take on Salisbury University at 11:00 a.m.
