Baseball Splits Home Opener Against Old Westbury

Brooklyn, NY - The John Jay baseball team split its home opener on Friday, falling to the Old Westbury Panthers, 8-6 in eight innings, before holding on for a 6-3 decision in the nightcap.

The Bloodhounds move to 3-2 on the season, while the Panthers now stand at 3-1.

The John Jay baseball team evened the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth before the visiting Panthers scored four times in the top of the fifth.

John Jay responded with five in the bottom of the sixth, but Old Westbury pushed across three more between the seventh and the eighth in picking up the 8-6 extra-innings win.

Ryan Cherichella, Hayden Tackett, and Anthony Agosta each had two hits, with Jaxen Gangwish driving in three RBIs.

Sean Jost earned the starting nod, going 4.1 innings, giving up five runs on nine hits while striking out three.

Michael Luongo came on in relief, working two innings, giving up a run on two hits while walking five and striking out three.

Julio Reyes (0-1) took the loss, giving up two runs on four hits.

RJ Azarieh and Nick Giovanakis had three hits for the visitors, and Azarieh drove in two RBIs.

Kyle Cavataio took the start, going 4.1 innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits while walking two and striking out six.

Joseph Lubrano (2-0) earned the win, throwing two scoreless innings.

Old Westbury got on the board first as Mike Petrucelly lofted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Jacob Taormina.

The game remained that way until the bottom of the fourth. Quentin Bowman reached on a fielding error before getting caught trying to steal second.

On a 3-1 pitch, Hayden Tackett clubbed his first home run of the season, tying the game at 1-1.

Azariah led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run to left center. Old Westbury added three more runs, two coming on a Giovanakis RBI single up the middle.

Dominic Felicetti laced an RBI triple to right center, scoring Giovanakis and extending Old Westbury's lead to 5-1.

John Jay staged a five-run bottom of the sixth, taking a 6-5 lead. Sebastian Sanchez led off with a double to left center. Tackett and Isaac Salazar had back-to-back hits as Salazar brought in Sanchez.

Two batters later, Gangwish uncorked a bases-clearing, three-run double to left center, tying the game at 5-5. Cherichella put John Jay ahead, 6-5, with a RBI single back up the middle.

Old Westbury got the tying run at the top of the seventh as Azarieh continued his hot hitting, sending an RBI single to the left.

With the game going to extras, Old Westbury scored the go-ahead tally, as Nick Miller singled through the left side before Taormina sent an RBI sacrifice fly to center, as the Panthers went ahead, 8-6.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Santo Anzalone singled through the left side before Cherichella walked. Bowman lofted a deep fly to center, ending the game.

Similar to game one, Old Westbury got on the board first before the Bloodhounds evened the score.

The visitors added a run in the third before John Jay erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth as they posted a 6-3 victory.

Axel Kappes III earned his second win of the season after tossing five innings, giving up two runs on two hits while striking out six. Sebastian Sanchez posted his second save.

Anzalone, Cherichella, and Salazar all collected two hits with Salazar driving in a pair of RBIs.

Taormina, Azarieh, Ricky Fasitta, and Angelo Velez had the lone hits for Old Westbury.

The Panthers scored first on a wild pitch as Azarieh came across to score.

Salazar led off the second with a single and promptly stole second to get in scoring position.

Gangwish sent a grounder to short that pulled the first baseman off the bag, allowing Salazar to score and tying the game at 1-1.

A sacrifice fly by Palumbo gave OWU the 2-1 lead.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the fifth, where John Jay scored five times on four hits, with the big blow of the frame coming on Salazar's two-run double.

The Panthers added a run in the top of the seventh, trimming the deficit in half, 6-3, but Sanchez got Fasitta to strike out look, ending the game.

The Bloodhounds will return to Maimoindes Park on Sunday to host Yeshiva.
