Softball Splits Thursday's Non-Conference Tilt At Drew

Madison, NJ - The John Jay softball team split their non-conference road contest on Thursday afternoon, falling in game one to Drew, 5-1, before earning a 12-5 triumph in the second game of the doubleheader.

With today's results, the Bloodhounds move to 16-6 overall, while the Rangers stand at 12-14 on the season.


Game 1 | John Jay 1, Drew 5

In the opening contest, the Bloodhounds tied the contest at 1-1 in the second before the Rangers sparked a four-run bottom of the second as Drew defeated John Jay, 5-1.

Alyssa Cadolino, Natalie Graham, and Kelly Fajardo each had two hits, with Fajardo driving in the lone RBI for the Bloodhounds. 

Graham (8-3) went six innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits while walking three batters.

Haley Meierhofer led the Rangers with two hits, while Josie Di Troia drove in three RBIs. Gabby Duran (2-2) earned the win after allowing one run on eight hits while walking one and striking out seven batters.

Olivia Magliacano led off the bottom of the first for Drew with a single to right field before coming into score on an RBI single from Meierhofer.


The Bloodhounds responded with the tying score in the top of the second. With one out, Graham singled through the right side and moved to second on the sacrifice bunt from Sidney Bankston. The next batter, Fajardo, singled to center field, scoring Graham as the game was tied at 1-1.

Drew notched four runs in their half of the second. Zoey Shimp was hit by a pitch before moving into scoring position on a successful steal of second. Delaney O'Donoghue walked before Natalie Mignone reached on a fielder's choice. Duran helped her own cause with a single to right and moved to second on the throw, while O'Donoghue scored on a fielding error by the bloodhound right fielder, giving Drew a 2-1 lead.

Magliacan walked. With two outs in the frame, Troia doubled to right, clearing the bases before being thrown out at third by Bankston. 

The Bloodhounds threatened in the top of the fifth as Fajardo singled through the left side to start the frame. Maleea Gallaspy was the next batter and flew out to center. Magliacano fired a strike to first to double off Fajardo before Duran struck out Elika Rodrigues to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, the Bloodhounds gave one last attempt to cut into the lead. Graham singled up the middle before moving up to second on the sacrifice bunt by Bankston. Gallaspy reached on an infield single to second base, moving Graham to third. Gallaspy promptly stole second, but both runners were stranded as Rodrigues struck out, ending the contest.

Game 2 | John 12, Drew 5
The Bloodhounds opened up game two quickly, scoring five runs over the first two innings in taking a 5-0 lead. Drew answered back with two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth, cutting the lead in half before John Jay sparked a seven-run seventh in taking a 12-5 victory to earn the split. 

Gallaspy and Rylea Sandel each had four hits for the visitors, with Sandel driving in three RBIs. Cadolino and Angelina Schoelles added three hits and two RBIs, as did Bankston.

Magliacano and Meierhofer each had three hits for the home team, with Meierhofer driving in two RBIs.

Gallaspy started with a single, followed by a double from Rodrigues. The next batter, Sandel, ripped an RBI single through the left side for the first run of the contest.

Cadolino sent a one-out single up the middle that plated Rodrigues before Bankston cleared the bases with a double down the left-field line, giving John Jay a 4-0 lead.

Sandel upped the John Jay lead with a single to centerfield, bringing in Fajardo, who led off the frame with a single through the left side. 

Drew scored twice in the bottom of the fourth. Ashlyn Cassetty doubled down the left-field line. Magliacan tripled to right, scoring Cassetty. The next batter, Meirehofer, singled up the middle as Drew cut the deficit to three, 5-2.

Following a scoreless fifth, Drew inched closer with a run in the bottom of the sixth. MacKenzie Pisani walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. A walk to Shimp and Kelly Severinse loaded the bases for Destiny Medina, who also drew a walk that scored Pisani. 

In the top of the seventh, the Bloodhounds sent 14 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs on seven hits. Following an RBI sac-fly from Rodrigues, Sandel doubled to left field. A wild pitch scored Gallaspy that made it 8-3. Cadolino added an RBI single, increasing the lead to 9-3 before Schoelles singled down the right-field line, extending the lead to 11-3.

A double steal from Schoelles and Bankston moved John Jay ahead 12-3. Fajardo walked before Gallaspy singled up the middle. Rodrigues flew out to right, ending the inning. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Meierhofer doubled to left, scoring Magliacan that made it 12-4. A walk to Teagan Bradley brought in Meierhofer, as the Rangers trailed 12-5 before Medina popped up ending the game.

The Bloodhounds resume CUNYAC play on Saturday against Hunter.

First-pitch from St. John's University is set for noon.
