Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Baruch; Sean Jost Fires Complete Game While Santo Anzalone Records Two Homers

Union, NJ - The baseball team split a conference doubleheader with Baruch College on a beautiful Saturday afternoon on the campus of Kean University.

The Bloodhounds now stand at 12-12 overall and 5-1 in CUNYAC. The Bearcats are now 6-18 and 4-4 in the conference.

Game 1 | John Jay 2, Baruch 1
Game one featured a pitchers duel between junior Sean Jost and Baruch's John Kim. With two outs and no one on in the bottom of the first, senior Santo Anzalone singled and advanced to third on a single by freshman Sebastian Sanchez. Senior Quentin Bowman connected on an RBI single to left field to give the Bloodhounds an early 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Anzalone crushed a solo home run to left field for his second of the season. After three full innings, the Bloodhounds led 2-0. Baruch responded in the top of the fourth with a run to cut the deficit to one.

With two outs in the fifth and a runner on second, Jost struck out the batter to end the frame.

In the top of the seven and runners on first and second, Jost retired the following two batters to notch his third complete game of the season. The right-hander allowed two hits and struck out a career-high eight.

Anzalone finished a perfect 3-for-3 and scored both of John Jay's runs. Junior Ryan Cherichella went 2-for-3.

Game 2 | John Jay 3, Baruch 10
Baruch got off to an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the first. In the bottom of the third, Anzalone belted a two-out two-run homer to left to even the score at two apiece.

Sanchez followed with a triple to right center and Bowman came through with an RBI single through the left side to give the Bloodhounds their first lead of the contest.

The visitors evened the score in the top of the fourth at 4-4. The Bearcats broke open the game in the fifth inning with three runs. They added four in the top of the seventh to hand the Bloodhounds their first conference loss of the season.

Sophomore Axel Kappes got the start and tossed four innings. Anzalone finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk. Sanchez and sophomore Jaxen Gangwish had a hit and run scored each. Senior Anthony Agosta registered a hit and stolen base.

The Bloodhounds hit the road for a non-conference game at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) on Tuesday, April 22.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
