KINGS POINT, NY - The baseball team fell to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) on Tuesday evening.
The Bloodhounds drop to 12-13 on the season. The Mariners improve to 20-11 overall.
John Jay got on the scoreboard in the first inning when freshman
Sebastian Sanchez delivered a two-out RBI single to score junior
Ryan Cherichella. The hosts scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to lead 2-1.
In the top of the third and trailing 3-1, Cherichella doubled and then scored on an RBI double by senior
Santo Anzalone to cut the deficit to one. USMMA followed to score a run in the bottom of the third.
However, the Bloodhounds responded right away courtesy of an RBI single by senior
Alvy Grullon. In the bottom of the sixth, the Mariners broke open the game with six runs to increase their lead to 10-3.
In the top of the sixth, senior
Ethan Simaan scored on a wild pitch and
Axel Kappes III scored on an RBI single by sophomore
Jaxen Gangwish.
Gangwish and Grullon finished with two hits and an RBI each. Cherichella reached base four times via two hits and two walks, while adding two runs scored.
Freshman
Craig Zuckerman threw two scoreless innings in relief.
The Bloodhounds are back on the road as they travel to Old Westbury on Wednesday, April 23. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
