Softball Falls At No. 8 Salisbury On Saturday

Salisbury, MD - The John Jay softball team traveled to Salisbury, MD, to take on the No. 8 ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls at the Margie Knight Sea Gull Softball Stadium.

The Bloodhounds hung tight with the Sea Gulls in game one, falling 5-3 before dropping the second game of the twinbill 7-0.

John Jay falls to 15-5, while Salisbury moves to 23-3-1 on the year.

Game 1 | John Jay 3, Salisbury 5

The Sea Gulls jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and added two more scores in the bottom of the third. The Bloodhound trimmed the deficit in half in their half of the fifth before Salisbury added one more in the bottom of the stanza. John Jay made one final push in the sixth, but the Sea Gulls held on for the 5-3 victory. 

Rylea Sandel led the way with two hits and drove in two RBIs. Maleea Gallaspy, Kendal Bryant, Olivia Paoli, Sidney Bankston, Natalie Graham, and Kelly Fajardo each had a hit, with Graham notching the other RBI.

Lindsay Ogden (6-3) allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits while walking one and striking out four batters.

Sam Flowers and Emily Stockman had two hits apiece for the Sea Gulls, while Carrie Jacoby went 1 for 2 with three RBIs in the victory. Sydney Adolfson picked up the win after throwing five scoreless innings, in which she allowed three hits and a walk and finished with six strikeouts. Isabella Purdy earned the save.

The Sea Gulls struck first as Flowers reached with a one-out double to left. Jacoby clubbed a two-run home run to left for the game's first runs. Salisbury added two more runs in the bottom of the third as Flowers brought in Emily Challender on an infield bunt. Jacoby sent a sacrifice fly to left that brought in Flowers as Salisbury upped the lead to 4-0.

Following a scoreless fourth inning, the Bloodhounds cut the deficit in half, 4-2. Fajardo reached on a one-out single. Gallaspy reached on a fielder's choice. Jordyn Prince walked, and both executed a double steal to move into scoring position. The next batter, Sandel, ripped a two-run single to right. John Jay threatened for more in the inning as Bryant walked, but both runners were stranded after Alyssa Cadolino struck out. 

Salisbury added a run in the bottom of the fifth as Stockman connected on a solo home run to left.  

The Bloodhounds continued to fight back, as in the top of the sixth, Paoli and Bankston reached on back to back singles. Graham pinch-hit for Schoelles and singled to right center, scoring Paoli. Fajardo sent a hard liner that was snagged by the second baseman and doubled up Graham at first before Gallaspy grounded out the inning.

The Bloodhounds were retired in order to end the contest. 

Game 2 | John Jay 0, Salisbury 7
In the second game, the Bloodhounds were limited to four hits as Salisbury defeated the visitors 7-0.

Gallaspy, Bryant, Cadolino, and Bankston all had hits for the Bloodhounds. Graham went four innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits. Kiki Iglesias came on and threw the final two frames, allowing a run on three hits while walking two.

Jacoby led the way for the Sea Gulls with three hits and drove in three RBIs. Justyce Richard added two hits while Flowers, Emily Stockman, Ellen Stockman, and Lexie Delcollo drove in an RBI.

Richard moved to 7-0 after tossing the complete game four-hitter, in which she walked two and struck out three.

Salisbury scored first in the bottom of the first as Emily Stockman singled to left, which scored Challender.

The Bloodhounds created a chance in the top of the third. Bankston led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. A groundout by Fajardo moved Bankston to third but was stranded as Richard got the final two outs of the inning.

Salisbury scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Jacoby connected on a solo home run to left before Delcollo sent an RBI single up the middle that plated Ellen Stockman.

The Sea Gulls add three in the bottom of the fourth. Flowers brought in a run on the sacrifice bunt before Jacoby cleared the bases with a two-run home run that made it 6-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Iglesias came on and gave up a solo home run to Ellen Stockman down the left-field line.

The Bloodhounds tried to get their first run in the top of the sixth. Gallaspy sent a one out single through the left side before Prince walked.

Sandel grounded to second, which moved Prince and Gallaspy to second and third, respectively. Bryant flew out and ended the inning. John Jay started the seventh with a single from Cadolino but she was left there as Bankston flew out to end the game. 

The Bloodhounds will head to West Hartford, CT, to tangle with the University of Saint Joseph on April 8.
