Baseball Falls In Midweek Tilt At Old Westbury

Old Westbury, NY - The John Jay baseball team dropped its midweek clash with the SUNY Old Westbury Panthers, falling 9-2 on Wednesday afternoon.

With the loss, the Bloodhounds fall to 12-14 while the Panthers move to 16-13.

Ryan Cherichella led the way with two hits for the visitors. Sebastian Sanchez drove in John Jay's only RBIs of the contest.

Fernando Sladky made his first start of the year, going two innings, giving up three runs on two hits while walking two and striking out two but suffered the loss. Danny Opramolla came on for the final six innings for the Bloodhounds, giving up six runs (four earned) on seven hits while striking out two and walking two.

Nick Mace led the way for the Panthers with three hits while RJ Azarieh collected two hits and drove in three RBIs. Justin Aramini earned his second win of the season, tossing six innings, giving up two unearned runs on five hits.

Old Westbury notched two runs in the bottom of the first as Sean Maddi sent an RBI single through the right side, bringing in Angelo Velez. Joe Morreale sent a sacrifice fly to right, adding a second run.

In the bottom of the second, the Panthers added a run as Zachary Horowitz sent an RBI sacrifice fly to give Old Westbury a 3-0. 
The Bloodhounds faced a 6-0 deficit heading into the top of the fifth. With two-outs, Jaxen Gangwish drew a walk before Cherichella singled to center.

A walk to Santo Anzalone loaded the bases for Sanchez, who delivered a single through the right side, putting John Jay on the board. 

Azarieh pushed Old Westbury's lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the sixth following a a two-run single to left field.

In the top of the eighth, Isaac Salazar pinch-hit for Sanchez, sending a single to left-center but Mark Piri grounded into a 4-6-3 double play before Ethan Simaan fouled out to left. 

Velez tacked on another run in the form of an inside-the-park home run.

The Bloodhounds resume CUNYAC play on Friday, April 25, as they will travel to the Bronx to square off against Lehamn

First-pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
