Softball Shines On Senior Day; Sweeps Lehman To Remain Perfect In CUNYAC Play

Union, NJ -  The defending CUNYAC champions John Jay softball team remains undefeated in league play, sweeping the visiting Lehman College Lightning, 11-1 and 10-5 on Friday afternoon.

Before the start of the contest, the Bloodhounds recognized their five seniors for Senior Day.



Game 1 | John Jay 11, Lehman 1
The Lightning scored first before the Bloodhounds answered back with two at the bottom of the first, a run in the second, and eight over the next two innings, posting a ten-run triumph. Lindsay Ogden moved to 8-4 on the season, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out eight batters. 

Olivia Paoli continued her torrid stretch at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two home runs and driving in six RBIs in the victory. Maleea Gallaspy, Rylea Sandel, Alyssa Cadolino each had two hits. Fellow senior Miranda Perez and Jordyn Prince had a hit with Prince scoring two runs. 

Lehman's Lizbeth Perez, Angelina Perez and Jelene Figueroa had a hit in the contest with Yudleis Pena driving in the lone run for the visitors. 

The Lightning got on the board first. Perez singled to left before coming around to score on the misplay by the Bloodhound first baseman. Gallaspy started the Bloodhound rally with a single to left and promptly stole second. A walk to Elika Rodrigues and a single by Sandel loaded the bases for Kendal BryantBryant flew out to left, scoring Gallaspy to tie the game at 1-1. With two outs, Paoli sent the first pitch she saw to left, giving John Jay a 2-1 lead. 

Ogden struck out the side in the top of the second. In the bottom of the frame, the Bloodhound went back to work, as Prince scored on an error by the second baseman, making it 3-1. 

John Jay erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third. Cadolino connected on a one-out double to left before Paoli clubbed a two-run shot to left, giving the Bloodhounds a 5-1 advantage.

Prince singled and moved to third on a throw as Perez came around to score on a misplay by the Lehman centerfielder that made it 6-1. Gallaspy added an RBI single to left, as John Jay moved ahead by six. The home team ignited their second-straight four-run inning. Sandel led off with a single to center before Bryant walked. Cadolino drove in Sandel with a single as John Jay led 8-1. 

Paoli stepped in and with the count in her favor at 1-0, she connected on her second home run of the game, this one of the three-run variety as John Jay increased their lead to 11-1. Ogden struck out the first batter she faced in the top of the fifth. An errant pitch her Figueroa before Perez lined out to Rodrigues in center, who alertly fired a strike to second to force out Figueroa for the win. 

Game 2 | John Jay 10, Lehman 5
The Bloodhounds jumped out to a 6-0 after four innings before the Lightning cut the deficit to one, 6-5 in the top of the sixth but John Jay tacked on four runs to pull away for the 10-5 win. Kiki Iglesias moved to 4-0 on the year after tossing six innings. Natalie Graham came on for the final inning, giving up a hit. 

Gallaspy went 3 for 4, which included her 200th career hit. Rodrigues and Paoli each drove in a pair on two hits while Bryant also notched a multi-hit game for the Bloodhounds. 

Perez powered Lehman with three hits and three RBIs while Pena added two hits and drove in two. Damaris Adames allowed five runs on five hits before giving the ball to Jireh Espina, who also gave up five runs. 

Gallaspy singled to start the game and moved to third on a passed ball. Rodrigues walked. The next batter, Sandel sent a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Gallaspy. In the bottom of the second, the Bloodhounds tacked on four runs on three hits. Cadolino doubled before Paoli singled. Cadolino scored on a passed ball.  Two batters later, Prince reached on a fielder's choice as Paoli scored on the play, making it 3-0. Rodrigues singled in Perez from third to make 4-0 before Rodrigues scored on a passed ball. 

Gallaspy got the milestone hit in the bottom of the fourth, singling to center field that scored Prince to make it 6-0.

In the top of the fifth, the Lightning got on the board on a three-run home run by Perez. They inched closer in the top of the sixth as Pena doubled in a pair as Lehman trailed 6-5. 

Gallaspy continued her hot hitting, starting the bottom of the inning off with a double to left field. Rodrigues followed with a double of her own that made it 7-5. Bryant reached on an infield single to third that scored Rodrigues, upping the lead to 8-5 before Paoli clubbed her third home run of the day, a two-run shot to center that made it 10-5. 

The Bloodhounds will host St. Joseph's University - Long Island in their home finale on April 30 at Bahoshy Field on the campus of Fordham University.

First-pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
