Softball Concludes Non-Conference Slate With Sweep Of St. Joseph's University - Long Island On Wednesday

Bronx, NY - The John Jay softball team closed out the non-conference portion of their schedule on Wednesday afternoon, taking both games of the doubleheader against the visiting St. Joseph's University - Long Island Golden Eagles, 12-2 (5 innings) in game one and 4-0 in the nightcap.

The Bloodhounds move to 25-9 overall on the year, while the Golden Eagles fall to 16-14 on the year.

Game 1 | John Jay 12, SJNY 2 (5 innings)

John Jay scored seven combined runs over the first two innings before the Golden Eagles plated across two in the top of the third.

The Bloodhounds' offense continued to produce runs, tacking on five more in the bottom of the third as John Jay posted a 12-2 victory in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader.

Natalie Graham moved to 10-5 on the year after going five innings in which she allowed two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out four batters.

Maleea Gallaspy, Elika Rodrigues, and reigning CUNYAC Player of the Week, Olivia Paoli, each had three hits in the contest, and Rodrigues had a milestone afternoon.

The Las Vegas, NV native produced a season-best four RBIs in the win while recording her 100th career hit.



Kendal Bryant had two hits and drove in three RBIs, while Rylea Sandel and Graham each had two RBIs.


The top four batters for the Golden Eagles - Jacqueline Flannery, Angelina DeLuca, Alexandria LaBarba, and Julia Ruocchio- had one hit, with Flannery and Ruocchio driving in an RBI.


Ruocchio allowed seven runs (five earned) on six hits in taking the loss. DeLuca came on in relief, surrendering five runs on seven hits in two innings.


Gallaspy started things off with a single and promptly stole second. Rodrigues' first hit was a triple to right center that plated the game's first run. 
The next batter, Sandel, grounded out to third, as Rodrigues scored to make it 2-0 in favor of the Bloodhounds. Bryant was next and took the 2-2 pitch from Ruocchio over the left-center field wall as John Jay led 3-0.

The Bloodhounds picked up where they left off. Graham and Kelly Fajardo each reached on errors before Gallaspy singled to load the bases.

Rodrigues stepped in and uncorked a 0-1 fastball to the warning track, reaching second as all three runners came around to score, increasing the lead to 6-0. Sandel brought in Rodrigues on an RBI grounder to short as the lead swelled to 7-0.

The Golden Eagles got on the board in the top of the third. Samantha Lugo and Adrianna Ciancuielli both walked before Lugo scored on the RBI single from Flannery.With two outs, Ruocchio singled that plated home Flannery as the Golden Eagles trailed 7-2.

In the bottom of the third, DeLuca came on for Ruocchio. Paoli started the stanza with a single before Sidney Bankston found room on the left side. Graham connected on a two-run double on the first pitch she saw from DeLuca as John Jay increased the lead to 9-2.

Kelly Fajardo grounded out to short that scored Graham making it 10-2 before four batters later, Bryant laced a double down the left field line that scored Rodrigues and Gallaspy.

Graham retired the next five batters before DeLuca singled. Trailing in the count 2-0, Graham got LaBarba to ground out to Sandel at short to end the game.

Game 2 | John Jay 4, SJNY 0

Sophomore Lindsay Ogden flirted with a no-hitter for the second straight outing, as the Loxahatchee, FL native notched her 13th complete game of the season and third shutout as John Jay picked up a 4-0 win in game two.

The lone hit Ogden gave up was to Flannery in the third inning as the second-year Bloodhound recorded 11 strikeouts, tying her career-high. This marks the fifth time in her career she has fanned 11 batters.

Additionally, her 11 strikeouts this afternoon pushed her to over 200 career strikeouts (201).

Rodrigues continued her torrid hitting, collecting two hits while Paoli joined her with a multi-hit game. Bryant clubbed her second home run of the day, driving in three more RBIs. Fajardo was credited with an RBI as well.

Ogden faced trouble early on as Flannery reached on an error but was able to settle in, needing just nine pitches to retire the side.

The Bloodhounds got three on the board in the bottom of the inning. Rodrigues legged out an infield single to short before Sandel walked.

With the count at 2-2, Bryant connected on her second home run of the day and ninth of the year as the Bloodhounds led 3-0.

Ogden proceeded to post six strikeouts over the second, third, and fourth innings, striking out the side in the fourth.

John Jay got one more run in the bottom of the sixth. Paoli started the inning with a single to left before moving up on the sacrifice bunt from Bankston.

Angelina Schoelles grounded out to short as Paoli moved to third. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Fajardo lofted a double to left center, scoring Paoli as John Jay took a 4-0 lead.

Ogden got Busa to strike out before Ruocchio made connected, sending what she thought was a single, but Bankston fired a strike to Alyssa Cadolino at first, who recorded the out just ahead of the head-first slide by Ruocchio.

Ogden needed four pitches to retire Brooke Bove as the Bloodhounds finished the doubleheader sweep.

The Bloodhounds close out the regular season on Saturday, May 3, as they travel to New Rochelle, NY, to tangle with Baruch at Flowers Park.

First pitch is set for noon.
