Baseball Defeats Purchase, 15-9, On Monday Afternoon

Wappingers Falls, NY - The John Jay baseball team pelted a season-high 15 hits in securing a 15-9 home triumph over the Purchase College Panthers on Monday afternoon from Heritage Financial Park, the home of the Hudson Valley Renegades. 

John Jay moves to 9-9 while Purchase falls to 8-17.  In addition to the season-high hits, the Bloodhounds drew a season-best 14 walks in the contest.

Eight of the nine starters had at least one hit, and six Bloodhounds recorded a multi-hit performance. Sebastian Sanchez led the way with three hits, while Jaxen Gangwish, Santo Anzalone, Hayden Tackett, Ethan Simaan, and Anthony Agosta had two hits.  Sanchez and Agosta delivered three RBIs in the win with Anzalone and Tackett driving in a pair. 

Michael Luongo went four innings to start the outing for the Bloodhounds. Saujan Christie worked just two-thirds of an inning before Julio Reyes (1-2) went 2.1 frames for the win. Tyler DeStefano and Sanchez worked a scoreless eighth and ninth inning, respectively.

Purchase's Liam Daly led the way for the Panthers with three hits and four RBIs. Mason Compton added two hits, while Frank Rega drove in two RBIs. Kyan Zamaniyan and Cole Johnson each worked two innings. Joshua Huerta (0-2) took the loss after allowing six runs on one hit, with four walks in the outing. 

Purchase jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a double by Daly but was thrown out trying to extend it to a triple. The Bloodhounds evened the score in the bottom of the second. Simaan doubled to right center before Agosta walked. With one out, Alvy Grullon singled and scored Simaan. 

The Panthers' sparked a four-run top of the third inning in building a 5-1 lead. With two outs, Myles Scarry reached on an error before stealing second. Panos Sinis walked, and both moved up on the double steal. Daly continued his hot hitting for the Panthers, singling home Scarry. The next batter, Rega, singled to left and plated a pair of runs, making it 4-1 before Evan Biener added an RBI single that made it 5-1. 

The Bloodhounds cut the deficit to two, 5-3, as Agosta cleared the bases on a two-out triple off of Cole Johnson before getting Axel Kappes III to line out, ending the frame.

The runs continued to filter in as the Panthers added to its ledger, going ahead, 6-3. Luongo struck out the first two batters but hit Julian Diaz and walked Scarry and Sinis, loading the bases for Daly. Up in the count, 1-0, Daly was hit, that forced in Diaz as the Panthers' doubled up their lead. 

John Jay wasted little time as they notched three runs in the bottom of the frame, knotting the game at 6-6. Grullon led off with a walk before moving to second on a single by Ryan CherichellaWith two outs, Sanchez ripped a double that scored Grullon. The next batter, Tackett, laced a double to right, scoring both runners to tie the game at 6-6. 

Christie replaced Luongo to start the fifth. A walk, single, and walk loaded the bases for the Panthers with pinch-hitter Sam Saltzman due up. Saltzman drew the walk that broke the stalemate, 7-6. The next batter, Diaz, lofted a sacrifice fly to center that scored Mason Compton, making it 8-6. 

John Jay struck again in the bottom of the inning. Agosta led off with a double before moving to third on a passed ball. Grullon walked, and with Gangwish in the batter's box, both runners completed the double-steal as Agosta scored. Gangwish continued the at-bat with a single to left before Anzalone sent a single to the outfield, scoring Grullon and tying the game at 8-8. The next batter, Sanchez, delivered a ground-rule double that split the outfielders and got caught under the warning track fence as John Jay took a 9-8 lead. 

In the bottom of the sixth, the Bloodhounds put up six runs, taking a 15-8 lead. John Jay batted around in the frame, sending up 12 batters, with Gangwish, Anzalone, Sanchez, Agosta, and Kappes III recording an RBI in the frame. 

Purchase got a run back in the top of the seventh as Daly capped off his day with another RBI, sending a single that scored Scarry. 

DeStefano came on in the eighth and walked the first batter he saw in Joe Salerno. Saltzman singled, but DeStefano settled in, striking out Diaz and getting Scarry to ground into the inning-ending 4-4-3 double play. 

In the ninth, Sanchez took over on the hill, getting three flyouts, including one to Anzalone in foul territory ty, ending the contest. 

John Jay returns to the diamond on Tuesday, April 8, as they take on FDU-Florham at 3:30 p.m. in Madison, NJ.
