Baseball Drops Midweek Non-Conference Tilt At FDU-Florham

Madison, NJ - The John Jay baseball team scored first in their non-conference contest at FDU-Florham, but the Devils erupted for six runs in the bottom of the first and added seven more in the second as John Jay fell 17-7 on Tuesday afternoon.

Hayden Tackett led the way with two hits, while Alvy Grullon drove in two RBIs for the visitors on the afternoon. Craig Zuckerman took the loss after tossing an inning, giving up six runs (five earned) on three hits while walking four and striking out three.

Five Devils had multi-hit games, with Aaron Santos collecting three hits. Jack Giovenco had two hits and five RBIs. John Rolli, Xavier Diaz, and Mark Geist all had two hits. Geist added three RBIs while Santos drove in a pair.Colby Craig was credited with the win after throwing two scoreless innings while allowing two hits.

The Bloodhounds scored first in the top of the first. Ryan Cherichella walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. The next batter, Anzalone, reached first on a throwing error by the Devils' third baseman, as Cherichella came around to score.

FDU-Florham sparked a six-run bottom of the first. Santos singled to left, bringing in the tying score. With two outs, Rolli singled up the middle, plating home Santos as the home team went ahead. A walk to Xavier Diaz set up Geist, who doubled in a pair as the lead moved to 4-1. Matthew Bond struck out swinging but reached first on a wild pitch, allowing Geist to score. Bond later scored on a throwing error by the catcher, upping the lead to 6-1. 

The Bloodhounds inched closer with three runs in the top of the second as they trailed 6-4. Isaac Salazar reached first on a throwing error and moved into scoring position on a single by Tackett. A walk to Agosta loaded the bases. During Axel Kappes III's at-bat, all the runners moved up on a wild pitch, with Salazar scoring.

With one out, Grullon laced a single to center, plating home Agosta and Tackett as John Jay trailed by two.

FDU-Florham answered back with seven in the bottom of the inning. DeStefano came on for Zuckerman. Santos reached on a single up the middle and scored on a throwing error.

Diaz singled, and the Devils had runners on the corners for Geister, who scored Rolli on a bunt single that doubled up the lead, 8-4. A third error by John Jay allowed FDU to score their ninth run of the game before Giovenco cleared the bases with a three-run triple, making it 12-4. Santos added an RBI single that extended the lead to 13-4.

In the top of the third, Sanchez doubled in Anzalone before Bond added to the home team's lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning. 
In the top of the fourth, Kappes III singled before Grullon reached on a fielder's choice. A walk to Gangwish loaded the bases for Cherichella, who singled in Kappes III. 

The Bloodhounds continued to find runs as Salazar singled to right in the top of the sixth that, cut the lead in half, 14-7.

FDU Florham closed out the game with three runs in the bottom of the seventh as Giovenco delivered on a two-run single to left.

John Jay will resume CUNYAC play on Thursday, April 10 as they head to New Rochelle, NY to tangle with Baruch at Flowers Park.

First-pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
