Bloodhounds Earn Split At Wilkes Tri-Match With Sweep Of Delaware Valley On Saturday

Wilkes, PA - The John Jay women's volleyball concluded their Pennsylvania tour on Saturday, splitting their time at the Wilkes Tri-Match, as the Bloodhounds defeated Delaware Valley, 3-0, before falling to the host Wilkes, 3-0.

The Bloodhounds set the tone early and didn't falter in posting a sweep of Delaware Valley in the first match of the day.

CUNYAC Player of the Week, Jadyn Orava, led the way with ten kills, and added six digs and four aces. CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, Adrienne Xiao, had 17 assists and three digs. Newcomer Lizbeth Martinez served up a career-high eight aces while leading the way with 11 digs.

Delaware Valley was paced by Monique Smith and Cassandra Gloster, who each had five kills. Madison Alexander had 11 assists while Nia Walker had 11 digs.

The two teams traded points in the early portion of the match, but the Bloodhounds separated themselves. Orava recorded a kill and then a service to put John Jay ahead by two, 15-13. Following a kill from Gloster, John Jay went on an 8-1 spurt to end the set, thanks to a kill from Emilia Cascapera.

The Bloodhounds opened the second set on 5-0 before DelVal got on the board with two straight points. John Jay sparked a 6-0 run, capped by two kills from Nina Bongiovanni. An 11-1 run highlighted by a pair of aces from Martinez gave John Jay a 23-6 lead before an attack error sealed the set.

Both teams exchanged points in the third set, with DelVal taking an 8-7 off a kill from Smith. John Jay produced a 12-4 run, with two more aces from Martinez, that extended their lead to 19-12. The Aggies closed the gap to 20-16 off a bad set. John Jay scored five of the final eight points, capped by an Orava kill for the win.

John Jay vs. Wilkes (20-25, 24-26; 17-25)
The second match of the day featured the Bloodhounds and the host Colonels.

John Jay found themselves in an early deficit before Madison Mullan recorded a kill to get the visitors on the board. The two teams continued to exchange points midway through before Bongiovanni recorded a kill that gave John Jay a 12-11 lead. Martinez followed with an ace. Wilkes closed out the set on a 14-8 run to take the first set.

The Bloodhounds responded in the second set with a pair of long runs that gave the visitors a 23-14 advantage. The Colonels answered back seven unanswered points, getting three aces from Mia Leon before Mullan killed the rally, setting up set point. Wilkes continued to fight back, scoring the next five points to steal the set, 26-24.

In the third set, the Bloodhounds commenced with a 10-5 lead off another kill from Mullan. Wilkes then scored seven of the next eight points, thanks to a kill from Abby Dornblaser, that gave the Colonels a 12-11 lead.

Wilkes staged a 10-5 run, as they took a 22-16 advantage. The Bloodhounds tried to mount a comeback with another kill Mullan but a service error ended the contest.

Orava led the way with 14 kills and 11 digs. Xiao notched 28 assists while adding a block. Martinez and Xiao each recorded three aces. Ally Sheridan led the way for Wilkes with eight digs and seven kills while Rachael Anderson recorded 18 assists. 


The Bloodhounds open CUNYAC play on Tuesday, September 16, as they travel to Medgar Evers.

First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
