Balanced Scoring Sparks Women’s Basketball In CUNYAC Home Win Over Medgar Evers On Wednesday Evening

New York, NY - With three players scoring in double-figures and nine of the ten players scoring a basket, the John Jay women's basketball team earned an 89-51 home victory over the Medgar Evers College Cougars at The Doghouse on Wednesday evening.

John Jay (4-12; 2-3 CUNYAC) was paced by Michaela Lattimore, who matched her career-high with her 12th double-double of the season and ninth straight, tied her season-high with 23 points on 10 of 13 shooting from the field, while pulling down 15 rebounds in 25 minutes of work. The Morristown, NJ native dished out four assists, had three blocks, and a steal in the victory.

Essence Richardson scored a career-high 17 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the field while hitting a career-best five three-pointers in eight chances. The senior guard matched her career-high with four helpers while playing 22 minutes. Miah Crockett netted 13 points, seven of which came from the free-throw line after going 7 of 7 while filling up the stat sheet, adding six rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block in 23 minutes. Kailani Galan scored a career-high nine points while dishing out a career and season-high five assists, while swiping a team-high four steals in her 25 minutes of play. 

Medgar Evers had three players score in double-figures, with Alexis Davis dropping in a team-high 22 points on 10 of 23 shooting from the field while registering a double-double with 12 rebounds. Jennifer Metra matched Davis with a double-double, scoring ten points and pulling in ten rebounds while also dishing out four assists. Aaliyah Lyons was the third Cougar player in double-digits, adding ten points, six steals, and two blocks for the visitors.

Both teams had a slow start to the contest before Davis netted the first basket of the contest at the 7:56 mark. The Bloodhounds started to find their momentum from the floor, sparking a 13-2 run over the next 3:18 in building a 13-4 lead, as Lattimore and Bryan Bascones combined for 11 of the 13 points as Bascones' baseline jumper pushed the lead to nine. The two teams split the final 16 points of the stanza as the Bloodhounds led 21-12 after one.

Galan opened the second quarter with a three-pointer off the feed from Crockett that doubled the Bloodhounds' advantage, 24-12. The Bloodhounds continue to fire on all cylinders, as they stretched the lead to 35-17 following another jumper by Bascones on the left side. John Jay finished the second quarter netting nine of the 17 points as Lattimore converted on a mid-range jumper as the Bloodhounds entered the locker room with a 44-25 advantage.

Starting the third quarter, John Jay increased its lead to 55-34 as Crockett powered the offense with six of the 10 points during the run after hitting a pair from the free-throw line. The Bloodhounds continued their scoring prowess, closing the quarter on a 7-3 run, as Richardson dialed up another three-pointer from the left wing after Galan spotted her alone with 37 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Entering the fourth quarter, the Bloodhounds embarked on a 13-2 run that spanned nearly three minutes with Richardson converting again from the outside after Natalie Simonds found her for her fifth assist of the game as the lead swelled to 75-39. Davis halted the John Jay run with a floating jumper in the paint off the pass from Metra. The Bloodhounds outscored Medgar Evers, 14-10, down the stretch, with Alexis Jones scoring the final basket for the home team on a driving layup.

For the game, John Jay hit on 46.1 percent from the field while limiting the Cougars to just 26.3 shooting for the contest. The Bloodhounds held a 58-43 advantage on the boards, with the team outmuscling the visitors, 38-23, on the defensive glass. Of John Jay's 89 points, 42 were scored in the paint, while the Bloodhounds had 16 second-chance points scored.
