New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team held a double-digit halftime lead and didn't relinquish it, as the Bloodhounds earned their second straight conference victory, defeating the visiting York College Cardinals, 74-36.
With the win, John Jay moves to 6-13 overall and 4-4 in league play while the Cardinals falter to 0-13 and 0-8 in conference action.
Four Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by Miah Crocket, who poured in a team-high 16 points on 5 of 10 shooting from the field while grabbing six rebounds and adding two steals in 22 minutes of work.
Bryan Bascones shot an efficient 6 of 12 from the floor en route to finishing with 14 points.
Michaela Lattimore continued her impressive double-double streak, as the junior forward tallied 11 points and pulled down a team-high 14 rebounds. Lattimore has now recorded a double-double in 12 straight games and has 15 double-doubles this season.
Alexis Jones finished one rebound shy of her first career double-double, as the sophomore guard netted 10 points on 5 of 7 shooting while pulling down nine caroms.
All ten Bloodhound players pulled down at least one rebound in the contest as the team tallied 69 total rebounds, a season-high for the program.
Amaniya Aiken paced the visiting Cardinals, netting a game-high 22 points on 10 of 34 shooting from the field while pulling down 13 rebounds, seven steals, one assist, and one block. Chamiya Foy had seven points and five steals, while Tyla Hooks had ten rebounds and just two points in 40 minutes.
Aiken banked home a three-pointer from the top of the key to give York a 3-2 edge before the Bloodhounds sparked a 6-0 run with back-to-back three-pointers from Crockett and
Briana Minick. The Cardinals went on a 10-0 run of their own in building a 13-8 lead as Foy completed the three-point play. John Jay closed out the first quarter with a 12-0 run, leading 20-13 following a Crockett layup.
Morgan Kimmi opened the second quarter scoring for the Bloodhounds, hitting on two attempts from the free-throw line, extending the Bloodhounds' run to 22-0 when
Essence Richardson hit a three-point at the 7:07 mark. Aiken halted the run with a layup. Lattimore muscled in two points to conclude the first half in John Jay's favor, as the Bloodhounds held a 37-24 advantage.
John Jay commenced a 9-2 run to open the third quarter as the lead increased to 46-26. The Bloodhounds continued to find their offensive stride, finishing the quarter shooting 50.0 percent from the field and on a 15-6 run as Bascones converted on the baseline jumper to stretch the lead to 61-34. John Jay converted 47.4 percent from the field in the stanza (9 of 19).
The Bloodhounds outscored York, 13-2, in the final quarter, limiting the visitors to a 1 of 15 shooting performance during the frame.
For the game, John Jay shot 33.8 percent from the field and outmuscled the Cardinals, 69-43, which included a 25-13 margin on the offensive glass.
The Bloodhounds will look for their third straight win on Friday, January 30 as they square off against Hunter at the Hunter Sportsplex at 5:00 p.m.
