New York, NY – In a pivotal CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) women's basketball matchup, the John Jay Bloodhounds delivered a 89–70 victory over the Hunter College Hawks at the Hunter College Sportsplex. This win marks a significant turnaround for John Jay, who had previously suffered a 90–59 defeat to Hunter earlier in the season.
The Bloodhounds set the tone early, starting the game on a 16-0 run before Hunter scored their first points of the contest. Freshman guard
Bryan Bascones got off to a hot start and led all scorers with 22 points (career high), shooting an impressive 9-of-12 from the field, and secured her first career double-double with 10 rebounds.
Junior forward
Michaela Lattimore continued her double-double prowess, notching her 13th consecutive and 16th of the season after finishing with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman guard
Miah Crockett matched Lattimore with 17 points, while grabbing four rebounds. Senior guard
Natalie Simonds added ten points and eight rebounds while sophomore guard
Alexis Jones provided a spark off the bench with nine points.
The victory improves John Jay's record to 7–13 overall and 5–4 in CUNYAC play, while Hunter falls to 14–6 overall and 7–2 in the conference.
For Hunter College, Mia Fuller led the Hawks with 16 points, going 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Makkedah Murray added 12 points, and Gianna Henriques contributed 11 points and nine rebounds. Despite their efforts, the Hawks struggled with shooting, finishing at 28.6% from the field and 25.9% from three-point range.
Going into halftime, John Jay led 49-23 with a 28 to 19 edge on the boards. The second half started off much slower as Hunter held the edge 4-3 until
Michaela Lattimore scored in the paint at the 6:44 mark. The Hawks continued to battle and cut the lead to 22 at the end of the 3rd.
The fourth quarter saw both teams continue to battle on the scoreboard. John Jay's efficiency was evident as they shot 50.8% from the field and 82.8% from the free-throw line. They also controlled the glass with a 58–21 rebounding advantage, including 49 defensive rebounds.
The Bloodhounds return home to The Doghouse on Tuesday evening, as they welcome Baruch looking for its fourth-straight win.
