New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team dropped its most recent CUNYAC contest, falling at The Doghouse to the visiting Hunter College Hawks, 90-59.
Three Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by freshman
Miah Crockett, who tallied a career-high 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting while adding five rebounds and dishing out two assists in 24 minutes.
Michaela Lattimore notched her tenth double-double of the season, scoring 15 points while corralling a new career-high 19 rebounds, 17 of those coming on the defensive end.
Bryan Bascones netted ten points on 5 of 8 shooting while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists in her 31 minutes of play.
Hunter was paced by Alexa Charles, who led all scorers with 33 points on 15 of 30 shooting from the field and 3 of 10 from three-point range in 35 minutes of action. With her scoring performance, Charles broke the CUNYAC all-time career scoring record, held by Baruch's Mia Castillo, as she now stands with 2,372 career points. In comparison, Castillo finished her illustrious career with 2,369 points.
Gianna Henriques notched a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing ten rebounds. Mia Fuller chipped in ten points while dishing out seven helpers and recording four steals.
The Hawks jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before the Bloodhounds took a 5-4 lead thanks to a three-pointer from Crockett and a baseline jumper from Bascones.
John Jay sparked an 8-4 burst to extend its lead to 13-8, after
Natalie Simonds connected on a pair from the free-throw line. Charles and Henriques closed out the quarter with points to even the contest at 13-13.
The two teams continued to trade baskets, with Lattimore pulling John Jay to within three, 24-21, following a layup from Simonds. Charles paced the offense as Hunter closed out the second quarter, shooting 7 of 12 from the field, as Charles netted seven of the 16 points. The visitors claimed a 40-31 halftime lead, with Bascones hitting a driving layup just before the horn sounded.
The Bloodhounds opened the third quarter outscoring Hunter, 12-9, and trailed by six, 49-43, after
Essence Richardson converted from the outside. Hunter began to put the game out of reach, staging a 14-5 run in which they held the Bloodhounds to two made field goals over the final 4:33 of the period.
Hunter started the fourth quarter on an 11-2 run, capped by a Henriques layup. With 4:17 showing on the game clock, Charles went coast-to-coast for her 31st point, completing the milestone for her as she became the all-time career-points leader in CUNYAC.
Bascones halted the run briefly with a jumper off the feed from Crockett, but Charles was able to hit on her final attempt of the evening, pushing Hunter's lead to 82-54. The visitors scored eight of the 13 points to remain unbeaten in conference play.
For the game, the Bloodhounds shot 33.3 percent from the field while Hunter converted at a 46.8 percent clip. The Bloodhounds held a 50-42 edge on the boards and were a plus-six on the offensive glass (16-10). Â Hunter scored 26 points off 28 John Jay mishaps.
The Bloodhounds return to the court this Saturday, January 10, as they travel to Baruch for a noon tipoff at ARC Arena.Â
