Men’s Basketball Posts Wire-To-Wire Home Triumph Against CCNY On Senior Day

New York, NY - The John Jay men's basketball controlled the game from the opening tip and didn't look back, as they defeated the visiting CCNY Beavers, 68-41, on Senior Day at The Doghouse on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Bloodhounds move to 9-15 overall and 7-6 in league play. John Jay is now tied with Baruch and York at 7-6 with one game to go on Tuesday at the newly-minted regular season champions, Lehman. The Beavers falter to 5-8 in league play and 6-18 overall.

Before the start of Saturday's contest, the Bloodhounds recognized their five seniors - Pael Atker, James Bradberry, Adrian Kopec, Keyshawn Miller, and Jamir Stewart in a pregame ceremony.
 

Stewart led the way with 16 points on 7 of 16 shooting from the field in 28 minutes of work. Kopec was 6 of 11 from the field and 2 of 5 from three-point range to finish with 15 points. The Staten Island, NY native was one rebound shy of a double-double, collecting nine caroms while dishing out four assists, and recording a block and a steal in 31 minutes of play.

Miller added eight points to go along with a team-high seven assists, six rebounds, two steals, and a block in 31 minutes.

Samuel Olubakin was the lone CCNY player to score in double-figures, finishing with 13 points on 6 of 9 shooting while collecting six rebounds.

The Bloodhounds scored the game's first four points thanks to the seniors Miller and Stewart. The teams traded points with CCNY getting to within one, 9-8, following a jumper from Camryn Reyes.

For the remainder of the half, it was all Bloodhounds, erupting on a 26-8 run and taking a 35-16 halftime lead after hitting 11 of 21 from the field as Stewart netted 11 points during the run. CCNY was held to just 3 of 21 with Reyes and David Leye combining for six of the eight points for the visitors.

The Bloodhounds opened the second half on a 9-2 burst, which extended to a 35-10 run after the first half as Kopec drilled a three-pointer following an emphatic dunk by Bradberry off the feed from Miller as John Jay led 44-18.

CCNY sparked its first run of the contest, outscoring John Jay, 9-3, over a five-minute span as Olubakin converted on a driving layup to cut the deficit to 47-27 with 11:23 remaining in the contest.

The Bloodhounds built upon their lead as the seniors exited the contest at the 2:44 mark. With just 26 seconds remaining in the contest, Luckas Schimsky broke free of his defender and converted his first collegiate points on a stepback jumper, concluding the scoring as the Bloodhound hung on for the 68-41 win. 

For the game, the Bloodhounds shot 44.8 percent from the field despite being held to under 20.0 percent from three-point range. The John Jay defense was on full display, limiting CCNY to just 23.9 percent shooting, 11.5 percent from long distance and forcing 17 Beaver turnovers. 

The Bloodhounds close out the regular season on Tuesday at Lehman.
