New York, NY - Senior guard
Natalie Simonds poured in a career-high 24 points to lead the John Jay women's basketball team to an 81-36 home triumph over CCNY on Saturday afternoon.
The Bloodhounds, winners of six of their seven games, move 10-14 overall and 8-5 in the league, while the Beavers falter to 6-16 and 4-9 in conference matches.
With one game left in the regular season on Tuesday at Lehman, the Bloodhounds are currently sitting in fourth, a game behind Lehman, which is 9-4 in league play.
Before the start of Saturday's contest, the Bloodhounds honored their two seniors for Senior Day in Simonds and
Essence Richardson.
The Durham, NJ senior guard shot 9 of 15 from the field while corraling seven rebounds and added a block and a steal in 35 minutes of play. Richardson registered her first career double-double, netting 12 points and grabbing ten rebounds while recording a team-high four steals in 31 minutes of play.
In addition to Richardson, both
Michaela Lattimore and
Bryan Bascones also recorded double-doubles in the victory. For Lattimore, she finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds while adding a game-high five blocks, three steals, and two assists in her 20 minutes of action. The double-double streak stayed intact for the Morristown, NJ native, as Lattimore extended it to 17 straight games while producing her 20th career double-double in the victory.
Bascones posted her second career double-double as the Worcester, MA native tallied 13 points on 5 of 9 shooting while grabbing ten rebounds. The freshman guard dished out four assists and added a block and a steal in 28 minutes of action.
CCNY was paced by Blessings Joseph-Pascall, who came a rebound short of a double-double, ending the contest with 12 points on 2 of 14 shooting and nine rebounds.
John Jay set the tone early, attacking the paint and controlling the glass. The Bloodhounds built a 22-14 lead after one quarter.
The Beavers tightened the margin in the second quarter, capitalizing on a brief John Jay scoring drought. CCNY trailed by just three at halftime, 27-24, following a pair of free throws from Joseph-Pascall, as the Beavers outscored the Bloodhounds, 10-5 in the quarter.
John Jay erupted for a 30-8 third quarter, shooting 60.0 percent from the field and holding a 17-6 edge on the boards as Lattimore, Richardson, Simonds, and Bascones combined for 26 of the 30 points in the frame.
John Jay continued to extend the margin in the final quarter, holding CCNY to just 17.6 shooting for the contest, ending the game on a 24-4 run as Simonds scored 13 of the 24 points.
For the game, the Bloodhounds shot 42.1 percent from the field while holding a 69-39 edge on the boards, which matched a season-high.
