Baseball Falls To Vermont State Castleton On Day Two Of RussMatt Central Florida Invitational

Davenport, FL - The John Jay baseball team dropped its second straight contest, falling to the Vermont State Castleton Spartans, 12-2, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bloodhounds (0-2) had three hits in the contest, with Sebastian Sanchez recording two of the three hits and driving in an RBI. Hayden Tackett had the other hit while Mark Piri was credited with the second RBI.

Sean Jost toed the mound for his first outing of the season, going three innings while allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits, walking two, and striking out a batter. Thiago Telles worked three innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out three batters. Julio Reyes and Craig Zuckerman made their season debuts in the contest.

The Spartans (3-1) scored 12 runs on 13 hits, erupting on six runs in the bottom of the seventh to seal the victory. Trey LaVigne and Alex McClelland each had three hits for the Spartans and combined for five RBIs, with McClelland driving in three. Mikey Raby Jr. had two hits, while Tommie Shaw, Justin Strozyk, Josh Misiaszek, and Sebastian Vazquez all had an RBI on the day.

Luke Russell opened the outing, striking out two batters in his lone inning of work, while Patrick Hallett earned the victory, going six innings, allowing the two runs on three hits while striking out six batters.

Following a scoreless first, Vermont State Castleton got on the board in the bottom of the first. LaVigne reached on a one-out double to left before coming into score on a McClellan RBI single. The Spartans tacked on four runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 5-0, as LaVigne delivered a two-run double to left center before McClellan cleared the bases with an RBI triple to right.

The Bloodhounds got on the board in the top of the fifth. Tackett led off the frame with a double to left field before coming into score on the RBI triple from Sanchez. John Jay threatened for more, as Piri sent a hard-hit grounder to short to score Sanchez, cutting the deficit to 5-2. Ichiro Washington was hit by a pitch but was stranded following an inning-ending double-play.

Vermont State Castleton added a run in the bottom of the sixth on the RBI triple from Shaw before opening the game up with six runs in the bottom of the seventh, as Vazquez delivered an RBI double before LaVigne plated him on a single to right center. Two balks in the frame brought in two runs for the Spartans before closing on a fielder's choice.

The Bloodhounds will have a day off on Thursday before returning to the diamond on Friday against Grove City for a 4:00 p.m. first-pitch.
