Clermont, FL - The defending three-time CUNYAC softball champions, the John Jay softball team, traveled down to Clermont, FL, for The Spring Games, where they will commence a six-game stretch that began on Saturday against the No. 1-ranked and defending NCAA champions, Trine University.
The Bloodhounds managed two hits against the Thunder as John Jay fell 6-0 to start the 2026 campaign.
Alyssa Cadolino and
Elika Rodrigues recorded the hits for the Bloodhounds with
Natalie Graham, Rodrigues and
Samantha Santana each drawing a walk in the contest.
Inside the circle,
Lindsay Ogden made her season debut, tossing four innings, while allowing six runs (four earned) with three walks and one strikeout. Graham came on in relief, tossing two shutout innings, while allowing just two hits and walking one.
Karley Trine and Emma Lee each had two hits for the Thunder, with Trine, Debbie Hill, Kennedy Huckeby, and Clare Feehan driving in an RBI for the defending national champions.
Hill earned the win after throwing six one-hit innings while walking two and striking out 11 batters. Alex Rodriguez tossed the final inning, giving up a hit, a walk, and striking out two batters.
Trine struck for two runs in the bottom of the first as Trine scored on a passed ball before Hill sent a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Tyra Marcum. Rodrigues got John Jay's first hit of the season with two outs in the top of the second, but was thrown out trying to steal.
The Bloodhounds threatened in the top of the fourth. Graham drew a lead-off walk.
Kendal Bryant reached on a fielding error by the catcher, to give the Bloodhounds runners on the corner, but Hill settled back in to strike out Cadolino and
Kelly Fajardo, concluding the threat.
Trine opened up the contest in the bottom of the fourth as Huckeby sent a sacrifice fly to center to score Macy Rocha to make it 3-0. Clare Feehan followed with a sac-fly to right, scoring Emma Lee before Natalie Summers came in to score on a passed ball. Trine closed the scoring with a double to bring in Whitney Duell, who drew a walk.
In the top of the seventh, the Bloodhounds started off with a Cadolino single. Rodrigues walked with one out to give John Jay runners on first and second. The next batter, Santana, reached on a fielder's choice as the Bloodhounds had runners on first and third with two outs.
Kiki Iglesias struck out to end the contest.
The Bloodhounds continue the Florida trip on Sunday with a doubleheader against Concordia University (Wisconsin) and Alvernia.
