Clermont, FL - The John Jay softball team was back on the field on Sunday for its first doubleheader of the season, as the Bloodhounds squared off against Concordia (WI) and Alvernia.
In game one, the Bloodhounds were blanked by the Falcons, 10-0 (5 innings) before dropping a heart-breaker to Alvernia, 3-2.
Game 1 | John Jay 0, Concordia University (WI) 10
The Bloodhounds were limited to just one hit as Concordia University (WI) Emma Shellstrom went four innings and struck out two as John Jay fell 10-0.
Natalie Graham took the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits.
Lindsay Ogden came on in relief, allowing three hits, four runs while walking one and striking out one in 1.2 innings.
Kiki Iglesias relieved Ogden, allowing two runs on three hits.
Natalie Polanco was the lone Bloodhound to get a hit on the day, starting the third inning with a base knock down the right field line.
Rylie DuVal led the Falcons with two hits and three RBis. Julia Moker knocked in two RBIs while seven CUW players had a hit on the day. Anya Weiler, Maggie Plahmer, Faith Keiper, and Isa Bruno were all credited with an RBI.
CUW scored the game's first run on a sac-fly from DuVal. The Falcons went on to add two more in the top of the second to go ahead 3-0. In the top of the third, the Falcons added a fourth run off a Plahmer single through the left side.
Polanco laced a single down the right field line to start the bottom of the third for the Bloodhounds. With one out,
Kayla Sauers drew a walk, but was stranded as Graham reached on a fielder's choice with CUW recording the out at third to end the potential threat.
The Falcons tacked on four more runs in the top of the fourth as DuVal connected on a two-run double through the left side. Weiler followed with an RBI grounder to short, and DuVal came into score on a wild pitch, making it 8-0.
RBI singles from Keiper and Bruno closed out the contest in favor of Concordia University (Wisconsin) in the fifth inning.
Game 2 | John Jay 2, Alvernia 3
In what turned out to be the closest game to date, the John Jay Bloodhounds rallied in the top of the seventh inning but couldn't get the game-tying score as the Bloodhounds fell to the Alvernia Wolves, 3-2, to close out Sunday.
John Jay had five hits on the day, as
Sidney Bankston, Polanco,
Samantha Santana,
Kelly Fajardo, and
Lindsay Ogden had a hit.
Kendal Bryant and
Alyssa Cadolino drove in both of the runs for the Bloodhounds.
Ogden (0-2) threw her first complete game of the season, giving up three runs (two earned) while walking three and striking out seven batters.
Alvernia also had five hits on the afternoon, as Alexia Fitzgerald went 2 for 4. Ryann Healey went 1 for 3 with both RBIs for the Wolves.
Both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the third when Healey tripled to right center, scoring a pair as Alvernia went ahead 2-0.
The Wolves tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Lizzy Williams grounded out to third, which allowed Savannah Richards to score on the play, increasing the lead to 3-0.
The Bloodhounds sparked a comeback in the top of the seventh. Fajardo sent a one-out single to right center before Ogden sent one to center, giving the visitors runners on first and second.
Elika Rodrigues drew a walk to load the bases. The next batter,
Natalie Graham, roped a liner that was snagged by the first baseman for the second out.
Both Bryant and Cadolino walked to bring in Fajardo and Ogden, respectively, as John Jay trailed 3-2. Alvernia went to the bullpen and brought in Natalie Berwick, who got
Sidney Bankston to strike out, ending the contest.
John Jay will play two more contests on Monday morning, as they take on Allegheny and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the afternoon.
