Women’s Basketball Wins Fourth Straight Contest; Posts Wire-To-Wire Home Triumph Over Baruch On Tuesday Evening

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team posted a wire-to-wire home triumph over the visiting Baruch College Bearcats, 75-43, on Tuesday evening.

With the win, the Bloodhounds move to 8-13 overall and 6-4 in the league while the Bearcats fall to 9-12 and 5-5 in league contests.

Three Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by Natalie Simonds, who came close to recording her first-ever triple-double, as the Durham, NH senior guard netted a team-high 16 points on 6 of 13 shooting while pulling down eight rebounds and seven assists, while also swatting away three blocks in 28 minutes.

Junior forward Michaela Lattimore continued her double-double streak, as it moves to 14 straight games and 17 this season after finishing with 12 points and pulling down a career-high 24 rebounds, 16 of which came on the defensive end in 25 minutes of action.

Lattimore's 24 rebounds are tied for the 15th most in all of Division III, matching the marks of Zemirah Enalls (Stockton), Molly Kosmack (Mount Aloysius), and Laura Johnson (Lasell, three times).

Alexis Jones rounded out the double-digits scoring with ten points. All ten players grabbed at least one rebound, with nine of the ten Bloodhounds scoring at least two points in the win.

Lola De Luka was the lone Bearcat in double-figures, scoring 16 points on 7 of 12 shooting in 21 minutes.

John Jay opened the contest with a 6-0 run, capped by a baseline jumper from newly-minted CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, Bryan Bascones. Madison Thornton-Lewis started the scoring for the visitors with a three-pointer.

The Bloodhounds doubled up its lead, 18-9, behind a 12-6 run as Jones converted from the outside. Kailani Galan sank a pair of free throws to end the first quarter as John Jay held a 24-13 lead. John Jay shot close to 50.0 percent in the opening 10 minutes (10 of 21) while holding Baruch to a 6 of 17 start (35.3 percent).

Both teams struggled in the early part of the second quarter before Lattimore converted on an elbow jumper off the feed from Jones.

Baruch got to within eight following a pair of free throws from De Luka, as the Bearcats trailed 30-22 with 2:06 to go before halftime. Simonds scored the last five points for the Bloodhounds and for the quarter as John Jay led 35-22.

The Bloodhounds continued to fire on all cylinders to start the third quarter, sparking an 11-2 burst that increased the lead to 46-24, as John Jay started the stanza shooting 5 of 7 from the field and limiting Baruch to just a made field goal from De Luka over the 3:32 span.

Despite both teams struggling to a combined 6 of 20 down the stretch of the third quarter, the Bloodhounds closed out the frame scoring nine of the final 13 points, as Essence Richardson converted from the outside to give John Jay a 55-28 advantage.

De Luka hit a step-back jumper to commence the scoring for Baruch. The Bloodhounds put the final touches on their fourth straight win by closing the game on a 14-8 run, and hitting 50.0 percent from the field while limiting Baruch to just 3 of 12.

For the game, the Bloodhounds converted on 34.5 percent from the field and held a 65-42 edge on the boards, thanks to Lattimore's career-high 24 caroms.

The Bloodhounds will look for their fifth straight win when they travel to Medgar Evers on Friday evening. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
