Keyshawn Miller poured in a career-high 31 points and helped the John Jay men's basketball team get past Medgar Evers, 85-75, on Friday evening.
The Yonkers, NY native converted 13 of 19 from the field while hitting 5 of 6 from the outside in his first game since posting the program's first triple-double in 15 years. Miller added seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals in 38 minutes.
Jamir Stewart and
Adrian Kopec each had 11 points, with the duo combining for 4 of 10 from the outside.
Alsseny Diallo was the fourth Bloodhound to net double-figures, finishing with ten points.
Medgar Evers also had four players score in double-figures, led by Boubacar Mbaye, who tallied a team-high 22 points on 9 of 14 shooting. Joash Beaton was a rebound shy of a double-double, as he finished with 20 points and nine rebounds.
Ahmed Toure recorded a double-double, chipping in 14 points on 7 of 10 shooting while pulling down ten rebounds and dishing out seven assists in 32 minutes of play. Isaiah Grant contributed ten points in 23 minutes of work.
Medgar Evers opened the contest on a 7-0 run before
Aidony Nivar hit on a three-pointer for the visitors. Nivar hit from the outside again at the 13:29 mark, which brought John Jay to within one, 15-14, before Toure converted on the other end.
The Cougars extended their lead to nine, 23-14, following a layup from Beaton. The Bloodhounds answered with a 15-2 spurt as Miller and Kopec connected from long range to give John Jay a 30-25 lead.
Medgar closed the first half on a 9-3 run, as Michael Perez beat the first-half horn with a jumper to give the Cougars a 34-33 lead. Medgar Evers shot 57.1 percent in the opening half while the Bloodhounds hit on 41.9 percent.
The Bloodhounds opened up the scoring in the second half on a layup from Kopec. The two teams traded buckets with the Cougars keeping pace before the Bloodhounds started to pull away, as Miller led the charge with 12 points that elevated the John Jay lead to 61-49.
The Cougars cut the deficit back to single digits with 9:03 left to play on a Grant three-pointer, but the Bloodhounds outscored the home team, 22-20, down the stretch, as
Ryan Swierczek scored on a layup after
Lucas Schimsky found him on the break to cap the double-digit win.
For the game, the Bloodhounds shot 53.1 percent, which included a robust 63.6 percent clip in the second half while hitting on 55.6 percent from the outside.
John Jay returns home to the Doghouse on Wednesday, February 11, as they host Brooklyn on Faculty & Staff Appreciation Night. Tipoff is slated for 8:00 p.m.
