New York, NY - The John Jay College men's volleyball team halted a two-game losing skid on Tuesday, defeating the City College of New York (CCNY) in straight sets, 25-23, 25-17, 26-24, inside the Nat Holman Gymnasium to complete the season sweep of the CUNYAC rival.
With the win, John Jay improved to 12-8 overall and 4-2 in CUNYAC play, while CCNY fell to 6-11 (1-5 CUNYAC). The Bloodhounds delivered one of their most balanced offensive performances of the season, finishing with 39 kills and a .245 hitting percentage while holding the Beavers to 27 kills and a .073 mark.
John Jay spread the attack effectively throughout the lineup as
Nick Fuentes and
Logan Ramos each recorded eight kills, while
Brandon Roman added seven. The trio consistently applied pressure on the CCNY defense, combining for 23 of the team's 39 kills.
Setter
Jimmy Thinlay orchestrated the offense with 19 assists, helping the Bloodhounds out-assist the Beavers 36-27.
Daniel Gonzalez Verdejo chipped in with six assists, while Ramos added three. Defensively, the Bloodhounds controlled the net.
Adam Bainey led the way with five blocks, while
Quez Martin added three blocks. As a team, John Jay finished with eight total blocks, doubling CCNY's total.
The opening set featured multiple momentum swings as CCNY jumped ahead early behind kills from Gabriel Linus and Nana Boateng. John Jay responded with a mid-set surge highlighted by consecutive kills from Fuentes and a service ace from Roman to even the score at 6-6.
The teams traded points throughout the second half of the set until the Bloodhounds seized control late. Roman delivered a key kill followed by a Ramos finish that pushed John Jay to set point. Ramos then sealed the frame with another kill, giving the Bloodhounds a 25-23 victory.
John Jay took command early in the second set and never looked back. Roman opened the frame with a kill before Bainey recorded a block to give the Bloodhounds an early edge.
A service ace from
Daniel Gonzalez Verdejo sparked a four-point run, extending the lead to 9-4. Fuentes and Ramos continued to attack effectively while Martin and Bainey controlled the net defensively.
The Bloodhounds maintained the momentum throughout the set and closed it with a block from Bainey and Martin, securing a convincing 25-17 win and a 2-0 match advantage.
The third set proved to be the most competitive of the night. CCNY battled back behind strong play from Linus and Boateng, building a late 24-22 lead and threatening to extend the match. John Jay responded with poise under pressure. A CCNY service error trimmed the deficit before the Bloodhounds tied the score at 24-24. With momentum shifting, the Bloodhounds capitalized on two CCNY attacking errors to close out the set 26-24, completing the sweep.
Ramos also led John Jay defensively with seven digs, while
Micah Rossman added six, and
Sebastian Rodriguez recorded four.
For CCNY, Linus paced the Beavers with eight kills and six digs, while Boateng and Amir Nabiyev added seven kills each. Setter Ruben Santiago finished with 20 assists, and Diangelo Arias recorded a match-high eight digs.
The Bloodhounds return to the court on Friday evening with a tri-match at Eastern University as the Bloodhounds take on Widener and the host Eastern.
