Bronx, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team delivered a balanced and efficient offensive performance on Monday evening, securing a 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 25-20, 25-16) victory over Lehman College in CUNYAC action at The APEX.
With the win, the Bloodhounds improve to 13-10 overall and 5-2 in conference play, while the Lightning fall to 9-10 (3-4 CUNYAC).
John Jay's attack was paced by a trio of hitters, as
Adam Bainey and
Quez Martin each recorded nine kills, while
Nick Fuentes added eight. The Bloodhounds hit .186 as a team and controlled the match at the service line and at the net, finishing with eight service aces and 11 total blocks.
John Jay established early control behind a decisive 7-2 run, fueled by kills from Bainey and Fuentes along with a service ace from
Logan Ramos. The Bloodhounds capitalized on Lehman miscues and maintained pressure from the service line.
Midway through the frame, John Jay extended its lead to 16-11 following another Ramos ace and a stretch of disciplined defense. Lehman attempted to rally behind Jordan Johnson, but John Jay closed the set on a 4-1 run, punctuated by a kill from Martin to secure the opening frame.
Lehman answered emphatically in the second, flipping the script with improved offensive efficiency (.333 hitting percentage). After trading points early, the Lightning seized momentum with a decisive 8-0 run behind Johnson's serving, including multiple aces and terminal swings.
Despite contributions from
Steven Ajazi and
Brandon Roman off the bench, John Jay struggled to regain rhythm offensively. Lehman closed the set on a commanding stretch to even the match at one set apiece.
John Jay responded with composure in the third, opening with a 5-2 run highlighted by a service ace from
Jimmy Thinlay and consistent attacking from Fuentes and Bainey.
The set remained competitive through the middle stages, but the Bloodhounds created separation with a late 5-1 surge, capitalizing on Lehman errors and strong blocking at the net from
Joshua Acevedo and Martin. A key service run from
Adria Galve pushed the lead to 20-16, and John Jay closed the frame efficiently to take a 2-1 match advantage.
John Jay put the match away with its most complete set of the night. After an early 6-4 edge, the Bloodhounds erupted for a decisive 7-1 run, sparked by back-to-back service aces from Martin and strong net play from Bainey.
The defense tightened as well, limiting Lehman to a .000 hitting percentage in the frame. John Jay continued to apply pressure through extended rallies, with Ramos and
Micah Rossman anchoring the back row.
A late kill from Acevedo and a final Lehman error sealed the victory, as the Bloodhounds closed on a dominant note.
Thinlay led all players with 32 assists while
Logan Ramos posted a team-high 12 digs in the victory.
The Bloodhounds return to the Doghouse on Thursday as they welcome the Baruch College Bearcats for a non-conference tilt with first serve set for 7:00 p.m.
